Searching for Barbara Scott and Janet Scott
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 19:31 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on Barbara Scott and Janet Scott, daughters of David Scott and Barbara Anderson. Born in Lanarkshire, they would have lived at Gill Mill in Lesmahagow and at Craig Mill near Strathaven in their early years, circa 1850s.

Any advice or information you can provide to help me piece together this genealogy would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.  What I am hoping for is a descendent of these two daughters.  Five children in all died.  Three Henrys, one William and one Robert.  The two daughters who went to America had no children.  Only three of the boys who went to America had children.

                  Sincerely,
                                     Shirley  (descendent of William 1876)

Hi Ticadeau,
I believe I have a connection to your Scott family.
David Scott ,born 23 June 1866 , married Emily Glass , elder sister of my Grandmother. His parents were David Scott + Barbara Anderson.
David Scott went to Colorado in 1888 to mine for gold and Emily and he were married in Glasgow in 1891. She entered the USA in 1892. Their children were all born in the state of Colorado :-  Samuel in 1895 , David R Scott in 1896 and Barbra in1899.
I do not know if Samuel married, but I believe he died in California in 1975.
David R Scott married Laura Johnson in Michigan in 1920 and they had David Scott and Laura Scott. Laura married ---- Stearns and I don`t know about David Jnr.
I know nothing about Barbara who was born in 1899.
David Scott 1866 and Emily Glass also lived in King County , Washington and David died in Seattle in 1931. Emily died in Almeda , near SanFrancisco on 13 October .
    1948.
We can probably exchange more of our findings-

Yes, we do have a connection.  David and Emily signed my grandparent's wedding record.  When I was seven, I believe it might have been they whom we visited.  I remember some beautifully colored abalone shells in their yard of which they gave us one.  I loved  the colors.  I remember being given some beautiful, ripe strawberries which we forgot to take with us back to San Francisco.  "Another brother, Robert lived in San Francisco.  I visited the old mill in Strathaven where their father David and Barbara lived.  It was possibly James who lived on School St. in Chicago.    Barbara and Janet remained in Scotland.   All of the others came to America.  I found their grave stone in Strathaven and learned they had a son named Robert who died in Stonehouse at age 27.  I was really surprised to learn how many babies they lost...about five while they lived at Gill Mill in Lesmahagow.  Barbara had grown up on a dairy farm on the island of Islay which I have now located.  Did I love the Islay lights!  I wore Barbara's wedding band for years until I had it framed with her picture.

Ticadeau is actually my cat and the name means little gift in Haitian creole.   My name is actually Shirley.  I live north of DC.  and my son who is 31 in NY.  My grandfather William Scott was the last son to go to America.  Will be happy to learn more from you.

 Hi Ticadeau / Shirley,
Good to make the connection. It also is the first real confirmation of what I had gleaned about David and Emily and the first information about my elusive GLASS family.
Emily visited Glasgow with her small children and I found her returning to the USA on the " Laurentian" on 11 October 1900 accompanied by her brother Joseph Rae Glass , escorting her home - the day after he had been married! Now that`s brotherly love. It would seem that life in the US had been fairly prosperous for her to be able to travel home to Scotland for whatever reason.
The info that I have , came from the LDS Family Research Site in the Record Search Pilot programme. Have a look while it is still available - if you have not seen it. I`m sure there would be more about the other brothers.
David and Emily also lived for a time in Silver Bow , Butte , Montana- still involved in mining ? A family annecdote tells of one of my father`s brothers , Samuel Hislop , visiting Butte from Glasgow , but we did not know why. I expect he was visiting his Aunt and Uncle. My Grandparents , Thomas Hislop and Elizabeth ( Glass ) were robbed of their luggage in the Rockies - were they also visiting David and Emily?
David R Scott and Laura Johnson appear to have lived out their lives in Michigan.
So , apart from David and William and James, which Scott siblings emmigrated to the USA?
                                                          Regards , Thommoje / Jean
