The Princess of Wales Hotel, Wheatbottom, Crook.
« on: Thursday 03 March 05 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I just wondered if the Princess of Wales Hotel at Wheatbottm, Crook was still with us??  My great great granddad owned it and died there sometime in the early 1900's.

My great great granddad was called Thomas Nelison, he was scottish, but had spent a lot of time in the gold and coal mines in South Africa with Peter Lee (The 1st labour chairman of Durham County Council, 1919).

I have located Thomas (b 1869, Scotland) and family living at 68 Hope Street, Crook on the 1901 census.  His wife is called Jane (b 1872, Shincliffe, Durham),  and children Thomas (b 1899, Scotland) and Anthony W (b 1901, Crook and Billy Row)  Living with them is a lodger and a Scottish servant.  It also states that Thomas is an Employer at a Pub - I assume this would be the Princess of Wales Hotel.

Any info on the hotel or its owners would be greatfully welcomed.

Thank you in anticipation
Legs

Hi,
The Princess of Wales used to stand opposite the Travellers Rest Pub. Long gone demolished circa 1960's.
My e-mail address is
There may be a photo of the pub around somewhere if you drop me a line.
