hi janice, according to the original press release in 2005
http://www.arts-sport-tourism.gov.ie/publications/release.asp?ID=1138
the 1911 dublin census was supposed to be the 1st part to go online
with the rest to follow over a period of a few years, until we hear an update
on that can only assume thats the way it will happen.it will include the entire
island eventually up til' independence  in 1922.
I did read somewhere, not sure if it was rootschat, that there might be an agreement
to include the six northern counties after 1922.
I did a few searches to see if I could find anything on the school in john street
downpatrick but so far no luck,I will keep trying and let you know if I find anything.

Here's hoping it will include all counties.  :)

The directories & newspapers, would also be a nice touch to have online. They would help to make up for not having the older census years.

Wishful thinking?  ;D

Hi Janice,

I hope that genealogy tourism, which used to be exceptionally good for Ireland, does not die off as a result of far too much information being put online. Remember that there are a massive number of books in archives and libraries throughout Ireland which will probably never be put online. A large number of these contain extremely useful genealogical information. There's nothing to beat a visit to Erin's Green Isle to double check some of the facts that you've obtained in the course of your research as well as meeting locals in the townlands where your ancestors originally lived.

Christopher.

Hi Anne
Thank you, very much appreciated!  I'll drop them a line and see what I can find out.

Hi Christopher,

I understand what your saying, but I believe the more information people have, the more likely they will be moved to save for a visit. It would be ideal, if we all had enough funds available to us to be able to travel there so that we can find out more information, but in reality most of us would have to know exactly where we should go to follow up, so that even more time and money isn't wasted.

In fact, I believe the more information available peaks the interest of potential tourists.  :)

I heard about this plan to put the Irish censuses online some time ago. Initially they were supposed to go live with the 1911 census for Dublin in June 2007, moving on to other areas gradually. Then there was some news that they were having a redesign because of what they found in the first transcripts they tried and would now launch in Autumn 2007. Since it is now virtually December I would say they have missed that date as well. These things are to be expected in IT systems (though since Canada and the UK have put censuses online before this is well trodden ground). What is surprising though is the complete lack of news on the Irish Archives website, or anywhere else on the web, as to what is the current state of play. Does anyone have any information on this?
