I sent my email to Chief Archivist who had responded to earlier email.... so fingers crossed and will convey any updates.  Meanwhile it is 1901 I am interested and that will not be soon.

Could someone confirm that all the counties of Ireland will be in this census release? I have just found that my grandfather was in Downpatrick in 1911 and it would be nice to look him up!  Other relations are Fermanagh/Leitrim.

Anyone familiar with the town of Downpatrick?  He taught in  John Street School but I cannot find any map to show me where that street is located or a direct reference to the school.

Yes I suppose I should post in Down section  :)

hi all, maybe they're afraid that when we can access it online they won't get as many personal callers to the archives etc,its a comment I've got from some people who work in these places i.e."we'll be out of a job if everything goes online"
also the minister mentioned in the press release is not in that ministry anymore, must check the government website to check who is.

Seamus Brennan, T.D. for Dublin South, is the new Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism

He hasn't much to say for himself on your thread Anne 8)

On the thread I found he has a short video where he says ....

"Welcome. I hope you find my new website useful and if I can ever be of any help please contact me."

That sounds like an open invitation to start sending e-mails to the new Minister 8)

Hi Anne (taid), gosh, you're up late, I was just being cynical about politicians not keeping promises.

Hi Christopher, gosh, you're up early.  Do you think contacting this new chap will do any good?  I would just like to know when the census will be on-line - it's the being kept in the dark that's really annoying.  If they are having problems putting it on-line then fine, as long as we are kept informed about new dates.

An aunt of mine married into some Brennans, maybe me & the minister are related so I could 'lean on' him as family  ;)  Regards, TonyR.

I too just sent them an email. Hopefully if enough people do this they will hurry up and put them on. (I also gave them a few other suggestions on what could be online for "free")   ;)

In Canada we have the images on the Archives site that you can search manually. On the Automated Genealogy site, volunteers from around the world have transcribed them. (they didn't need to leave their homes to do this, so alot quicker than having a few people go to the archives and attempt to transcribe.)

I don't think they should be worried about their jobs.  ;) The National Archives of Canada is kept very busy, and they have lots of "free" info online. There will always be the need to go to the archives for information that will never see the scanner.

Hi Janice, what other things have you suggested should be on-line?

I have been in contact with GRONI about a suggestion, but so far it feels as if they are ignoring me.  TonyR.

Hi TonyR

I explained about the Archives in Canada site and how they have Attestation Papers online for World War 1, Boer War, as well as passenger lists, city and provincial directories, land grants, etc.

http://search-recherche.collectionscanada.ca/ancestors/search.jsp?Language=eng

I explained how much quicker things can be transcribed by volunteers all over the world, if they just scan them and put them online.

Census records for Canada on Automated Genealogy are directly linked to the Archives.
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com

I also told them about a site that is transcribing passenger lists.

Paper of Record site presently has only 1 newspaper from Ireland. If more newspapers were scanned, the information that could be found in them, could make up for alot of the missing records. (some of our local libraries also have local newspapers online for free.) Internet Archive also has directories for Canada online, but very little for Ireland.

They could also put photos online of different homes, streets, people etc., as they help in letting us understand how and where our ancestors lived.

Cemetery transcriptions are also becoming more common, not only on the regular sites like Interment.net, but also locally.

Quite a few of our local cities as well as a few of the provinces have now started putting birth, marriage and death certificates or transcriptions online. (If you want actual copies you have to pay  :P)

I should add, that the Archives in Canada are revamping their site, so alot of the links to images aren't working at the moment. They promise they will be working again very soon.
