Thanks Hugh!  I am anxiously awaiting 1901 for my one brick wall and see it mentioned in the link you posted as being started to be released by end of this year.

 So fingers crossed!

I'm patiently,[not] awaiting the 1901 census to find my grandfather,
Robert Henry Kane who was not in the English or Scottish 1901 census.
He was in Glasgow with family in 1891.
He was in Lucan in 1905 at the death of his gr mother, and in Dublin in 1907 at his marriage to Annie Boshell.

If you know where an ancestor lived you can order a copy of the 1901 or 1911 return from the National Archives for the sum of  €2.54..

see : http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy/censusrtns.html

the form required is available here  : http://www.nationalarchives.ie/PDF/CensusForm.pdf

I have not used this service myself, and do not know if it applies outside Ireland - but might be worth trying if you cannot wait for the online version.

As well as the name they require exact location details for the search - e.g. Townland, (Civil) Parish and County.

I have tried the service Shane mentioned and it is very good if you have exact details and know what you want. I would not recommend it for speculative applications as that only slows down a service which is already under-staffed.

I wonder why they are realising 1911 Census in Tranches and then they are going to realise the whole of 1901 together by end of 2009? Seems a bit optimistic
Not that i would be complaining if we get a great Christmas present like 1901 Census

I was wondering that also...

The only reason I can think of is that they are working on both at the same time. Maybe during the proofing process it can be useful to compare equivalent households on 1901 vs 1911...

Yes could be right Shane or another guess on my part is Canada is look after one census and Dublin is looking after the other.

Was not sure how much help they are getting in Dublin from their Canadian counterparts. Who i believe have collaborated with the project.

The Canadian 1901 census has been online for quite awhile (can't remember exactly how long) and then when 1911 was added some of the people were linked so that if you found say John Anderson born Aug.1854 in one census you could click on link in last column on right side of transcription page and 1911 census entry for him appears.
