Buchan Cottage, Aberdeenshire-Help Please!!
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 14:21 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I have got lots of relatives with the surname McIntosh that all were born at Buchan Cottage, Aberdeenshire. The years were 1877, 1879 .  Have looked it up on google and found one that is a holiday cottage.

Others in the family were born in Gartly and Arabella. Is Buchan Cottage a popular name in Scotland?

Thanks for your help
Mcaussie

Hello Mcaussie,

I suspect that Buchan Cottage would be fairly common in Aberdeenshire however, if you have downloaded some of the birth certificates of your McIntoshs then it should tell you at the top of the page which parish in the county of Aberdeen the births were registered in. That would narrow it down a bit  :)

If I have the correct family in 1881 they are listed as living at Bucharn, Cottage at Gartly. (James McIntosh is the head born Glass about 1850)

If you go to NLS maps http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_2nd_list.html and choose sheet 86 - Huntly.

Zoom in on the sw section and you'll find Bucharn between the A and T in the word STRATHBOGIE.

Hope you manage to find it from my directions!! ::)

Regards,
Nel

Hi Nel

Thanks so much for your great info on the map site. I found Bucharn really quickly.
It's nice to have a few maps so you know where your research actually is.

Thanks again

Mcaussie

Hi there,

Have just joined this site and see that you have an interest in the Philp's of Fife, Scotland.

My name is Peter from Melbourne Australia and am researching the linage of my clan before travelling to Scotland in August.

My great grandfather was Robert Philp, born (I believe) in St Andrews in 1849. As a child he came to Australia and later became a leading clergymen with the Methodist Church. I understand that his family roots in Scotland were Presbyterian.

Wondering if your Philps might link into mine.

Regards, Peter Philp
