Garnlwyd Cottages, Maesteg 1861

I have just acquired my great grandparents (George Carter and Mary Ann Badger) marriage certificate for 7 October 1861.  At that time they were both recorded as living at Garnlwyd Cottages, Maesteg.  However on the 1861 George was living in Paulton Somerset and Mary Ann in Merthyr.

Does anybody have the census information identifying Garnlwyd Cottages on the 1861 census.

I would like to check if there were any obvious family associations living at Garnlwyd cottages when the census was taken.

Houses listed as Garnllwyd seem to take up at least three pages on the 1861:

RG9/4073 F39  P 20  to F 40 P 22

Also another one at F38 P18  next to the Royal Oak. I've looked through quickly and can't see anyone with those surnames but I might have missed them. Most householders appear to be coal miners and labourers.

Thanks for that, I'm not really expecting much from this.  There seems to be some intrigue around the marriage, I think Mary Ann got pregnant whilst in service in Somerset, returned to Wales to have the baby and then George followed for the marriage.  Why Bridgend instead of Merthyr, seems a mystery but your lead will surely help.  Thanks again

Looking at it from the child's birth - if it was in the Bridgend area.  I couldn't find a Badger birth up to 1865 on the BMD index, but there is a Alice Carter (the only Carter born in Bridgend) in Bridgend in 1863 followed by a Jane Carter in 1870.

Thanks for the reply.  No the birth was not in Bridgend it was in Somerset.  I have just applied for the birth certificate for the child (John Henry Carter) in the hope that it will give a clue to George Carters parents.  There is some doubt about who his parents are and in fact there is quite a lot of posting currently happening on the Somerset forum debating the issue.  I am hoping the birth was at the grandparents house!

Another person has been inquiring about Garnlwyd they have linked it with Cwmdu Maesteg
 Cwm du (black pit)was an old name for St John's Colliery Maesteg which was near Cemetry Rd if I remember correctly definitely off Bottom Road (Bridgend Rd)so I am guessing its in that area although there is nothing shown on my present street map. I'll ask around and report back

Garnlwyd or the Garn is one of the older parts of Maesteg.  The Catholic Church and school are there as well as Garnwen surgery, not forgeting the Garn Inn. Untill the 1970's the old Truck Shop (a system whereby workers would be paid mostly in tokens that could only be redeemed at the company shop) was situated at the road junction leading up to the Garn Road from Bethania St.

Many thanks for that Gareth I must get up to Llangynwyd to take a photo of the Church for Ray  need time and fine weather.
A quick update on the family:
The couple did not stay in Maesteg long.
She is in Merthyr on then1861 census with a son b 1859 as BADGER (was he George's son? he took the name Carter after their marriage)
The marriage was Oct 1861 in Llangynwyd
John Henry was born in Somerset in Q1 1862
We think George had come from Somerset looking for work and had met Mary Ann neither of her parents were alive so he possibly took her to his parents to have the child she already had the one little child to care for and no parents to help her
They had another son Q3 1864 in Merthyr and settled there

It if strange though as George appears to be in Paulton in 1861
