Advice needed - forums for Scottish research
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 11:59 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschat
I've just started out and found this forum from the scotlandspeople site.  I've been lurking around here for a few weeks before joining and the posts have been very helpful.

I also saw the link to the Scotfamtree website and wondered if anyone had any experience of this?  It's £10 to join but I can't see what I get until I buy, and I'm already finding my credit card beginning to melt with all the spending on scotlandspeople.  So far reading this site and TalkingScot have helped me loads for free so I'm not sure if I should pay to join that site?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Katie

Welcome to Rootschat.

Between this site and TalkingScot we should be able to cover the majority of any queries that you may have and be able to point you in the right direction to find the answers if we are unable to assist directly.

Not being a member of Scotfamtree I cannot comment on their site or usefulness but my own personal opinion is that  you make use of the free resources first and then go to the fee sites if unable to find what you want.

Every tool is useful - a lot depends on when you use them.

Hibee is correct Katie.  (Added - Falkryn too)

Tons of free sites to look at first before deciding / committing your well earned pennies to any one site.

Post some of your queries on this forum first - gradually, but fairly quickly, you'll pick up what is good for you.

Since you are posting on Scottish board, I assume you are interested in your Scottish ancestry?

Hi Falkryn

I suppose that's exactly what I was thinking - at the moment I'm getting all the help I need from browsing the free sites, so do I really need to pay?   I was just curious about what they had to offer as there are only 3 sites listed on Scotlanspeople so that made me think i should maybe join.  Their free area is mostly chat so doesn't give me any feel for the content of the main site.  However, I can see they have a mining section which would really interest me and that's not specifically covered by the other forums I've seen.

Thanks Dave/Hibee, I have already been picking up many tips on freebies :)

Hi

I am a paid up member of Scotsfamtree and cannot recommend it enough. It works on a tier system and Tier 1 is free to join

I recommend you join the free tier first where you will be able to see what resources are available for look ups etc  from tier 2

Not only do you  find like minded people but you will also find that the friends you make on the site are second to none.
