TURILL family Berkshire

Does anyone have any information on William Turill who married my gt gt aunt Mary (Polly) Ann Cook b1880 in Basildon. They had one child Emily b1905 who lived next door to me for many years. I would like to know whether the Turill family were local as I can't seem to find out any info on them.

Looking at the census, Mary Ann appears to have been the daughter of John and Emily.

There is a William TURRILL b Oxford 1878 showing up on the census, but without a cross reference from the marriage cert, it is difficult to say.   In Oxfordshire and Berkshire the name TYRRELL is pretty common and I have seen this morphed as TURRILL and various derivatives.

Hi HarryW Thank you for that information. I thought there was a descrepancy with the spelling of Turill/Tyrell, in the past they did kind of chop and change a bit with their surnames.
Hey of possible interest to you re Noakes. George Noakes and his wife were my neighbours (4 doors away) growing up in Basildon. He was born in 1902, I think he has since passed away now. Is he one of your family tree members? There are a couple of paragraphs on him in the History of Basildon written by Clive Williams from a 1986 tape recording.

Re George Noakes - it's always possible, there are a few born around the right time but they are also resonably distant on my tree and I have no idea where they lived as adults.

Ooh Shad are you related to Mr Noakes & his wife Joanna who built their mausoleum in Tomb Farm Basildon in the 17thC??

haha, sounds a bit spooky to me! No the Noakes family were no relation, but George Noakes b1902 was a near neighbour of mine. I remember his wife used to play piano at my ballet lessons in the old village hall in Basildon.
One of my other neighbours used to call him 'Old Noaksey'.

Hi Matt, thanks for that. No I haven't heard from Julia yet, maybe she's had second thoughts and can't bear the thought that we may be related! I think it's pretty cool actually. After all, in those days unless you had the financial means, people didn't travel far from their families/homes. My Channel Island family tree is full of the same names throughout as there were only so many families on an island and there was bound to be a bit of intermarrying going on.

Yes I suppose it was common.. with my Buckinghamshire family about 30-40 family names marry in and out and back again and it gets quite confusing!
