There is a public family tree on Ancestry.com which has some of the information that Trish and I have located.
The owner of this tree has been active on Ancestry in the past week.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8458716/person/-947087553?ssrc=

Not sure if you need to be a member of Ancestry to access this tree.
You can be a non paying member of Ancestry.

There is also a private tree there which has Emily Taplin Birth 1851 Basildon, Berkshire, England

Thanks Trish and Mick, didn't know much about Beckett or Taplins, really useful, but I do have quite an extensive Cook family tree from a distant Cook relative in Australia. Great to see the occupations of the people at the time too.
I will endeavour to have a look at the public family tree on ancestry site.
Didn't realise there would be so much help so quickly.
Cheers

Hi All,

My gggg grandfather was called Charles Taplin and he was born in Basildon in about 1814. It is possible that William is his brother. Charles was the son of William Taplin born in about 1775 in Berkshire. Although I haven't been into the Taplins before now, I have some burials that might be of use to you.

Basildon St. Bartholomew's Church.
Cook Emily buried on 16 Jul 1927 aged 74 of Upper Basildon
Cook John buried on 24 Dec 1928 aged 73 of Upper Basildon

Hi Matt Thanks for that. We are most probably 4th or 5th cousins then maybe?
John Cook and Emily Cook were my gt gt grandparents and I didn't have a year of death for them, so really useful.  I thought they may have been buried in St Bartholomews Church though as that was the only churchyard in the village. It's located in Lower Basildon. After that they used St James the Less cemetary in Pangbourne and then up the hill in the current one. Amazing the info that's out there!

Hi Shad,
I am afraid that although your gg grandparents are buried at Lower Basildon, there is almost certain to be no headstone visible there now. The graveyard is no longer in use and is, unfortunately, neglected. But I am off to Record Office next week and if i get the time I will look at the Basildon Headstone Transcripts taken in the 80's and see if there's a Cook in there.

Yes St. James the Less Church is full though I see right at the back there are a couple of recent graves. The cemetery is used now, on Pangbourne Hill, just outside Pangbourne College. My grandparents were laid to rest there.

Well Charles is my gg gg grandfather and William is your gg g grandfahter... so we share William 1775-1848 as a Common Ancestor.. so we are 5th cousins once removed  :)

Nice to meet you.
Matt

I am just up the Road from Basildon and Pangbourne - I know it well enough.

Cheers Matt, I didn't get the chance to visit that cemetary when I was last over in 2007, and as you say I wouldn't probably have been able to trace them due to lack of headstones. Only if you have time/inclination when you go to records office. No worries and all that.
My grandparents are buried in the cemetary up Pangbourne Hill and there are a few Cooks there too. The last surviving Cook, Harold died in May 2007 as I woud've paid him a visit.
By the way I was born and bred in Basildon, Pangbourne Road. Awesome place to be brought up.

My father was born in Basildon in 1956 - this is a long shot but do you remember an Alwyn Arthur James Banks (Jim) born in 1921 died 2000 who lived at Teneplas Drive in the 60's then up at Wakemans till he died. He is my grandfather. Also the Smith family of Bethesda Street and Blandys Lane?

Sorry, hope you don't mind my asking - I am the youngest of all my cousins and my grandparents are both dead so I have no-one to ask these things anymore.

My grandfather Jim was the son of John Harry Banks and Dorothy Agnes Smith of Trees, Lower Basildon. John was a blind basket maker.

Basildon really is a lovely place, very picturesque. Even though it has been thoroughly modernized.

Hi both,
With an interest in this because Matt's Charles Taplin links in with my Sellwoods, a word of caution.
Take care. Don't get too carried away before you have proof of the relationship between Charles and William Taplin.
According to the IGI, Charles Taplin was the son of William and Mary bap 1811, whereas William was son of William and Martha bap 1809.
The IGI could, of course, be wrong, or one of them be a mistranscript, or Father William  married twice. Only the original Parish Records for Basildon would show that.
Good luck at the RO, Matt.

Hi Matt, sorry I don't remember your grandfather, or the Smiths but I do remember a Banks family at Wakemans that had 10 children. Are you related to them?
