I am seeking information on my Great Grandfather John Harington.  Thlittle information I have is sketchy at best.

John Harington Born abt 1874

Commercial traveller from San Francisco California USA

Arrived in Sydney Australia ?

Mother unknown and Father unknown

Married to Dorothy Jaeschke in Sydney Australia ?

John died 1910 Sydney Australia

If anyone has any family information no matter how small I would be very greatfull.

I see that John and Dorothy's son had a middle name of Winnington.  Assuming that is a surname, do you know if that name was on Dorothy's side?  If not, there could be a chance that it has a connection to John's family.

We know that they had one son my Grand Father Reginald Winnington Claude Harington Born in Sydney 24/02/1908.

What we don't know or have are birth, marriage details of John Harington.

Just doing a search of this site when I came across your post.  We are distantly related through the Cundith line.  Some years ago now,  I was in contact with a cousin of yours and we tried to find out about about John Harington and that was before recent internet indexes.  We did not advance very far but if I remember correctly there was a chance that John Harington was from the UK not USA as he claimed.  Quite a mystery.  I shall dig out my old notes. Hi,

Your G'ma, Ruby Cundith/Harington, was my Dad's first cousin and her family lived in Gympie.  I have looked at my notes and I have stuff which you may already know.  Dorothy J divorced John H November 1918 - from notice in Sydney Morning Herald.  Dorothy remarried ?Fraser.  Her funeral notice was in Courier Mail, Brisbane.

She had a business - dressmaking? - in posh Rothwell's arcade, Brisbane. (from Directories)  She lived Dean St Toowong Brisbane.  Reg/Claude could have gone to private school nearby.

Today, I found a Dorothy Harington went insolvent in 1921 - see Q State Archives.  Also I googled RWCH's full name and found a discussion of his WW2 details plus more.

We felt we could have gone a bit further but did not have the money to spend on documents eg divorce papers.  Hope this is helpful. Gazania

Update;

Just searched National Library of Australia site for their indexes of OZ newspapers.  Found Harington divorce details were  reported in more depth 27 Nov 1917 in the Sydney Morning Herald. Grounds were desertion and the marriage took place in May 1907 in the Congregational church, Sydney.  NSW BMD indexes give marriage details to purchase certificate which should detail John Harington's parents' names.  Regards, Gazania
