I found this excerpt from someone else's research on their family and it included a William Coult:

Arrival: 5 Oct 1854 - wagons- however - Rasmus Julius walked - no room in wagons
Comments: John Johnson Dunn Joshua Holland William Coult/Utah Raphael Cheadle/1852 Oregon trail to Oregon

It seems to suggest that he traveled by wagon train to Utah.

Davey ... Fowler ... Jones ... Morrow ...

Thanks Merjones for this fascinating extra bit. Perhaps this relates to the son William James Coult or the previous passenger list info couldn't have been my William. i.e. passenger list didn't have him coming into America until 1859 but the trail to Utah was in 1854. Sorry to be a pain but was there only one William Coult coming into America between 1851-9 ?

Using the exact spelling, there was only one William Coult arriving between those dates (the one merjones found).

There's a chance his name was not spelled correctly, or that he sailed to Canada.
