Could someone date this photo please?
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 21:58 BST (UK) »
Could someone help with dating this photograph please? Unfortunately, it's a photo of a photo.

Thanks,
Jill

Hello Jill
Well you haven't given much to go on.I can say that Thomas Vipond was trading in Mansfield 1890's - 1900's.The back of the card will probably give better details but as you don't have the original the best estimate I can give is early 1900's.

I think at least before 1906-ish. The waistcoat has no lapels, but the collar isn't very high and they were into the high collars by about 1906. Collars around 1900 had the little turn down point . So between 1900 and 1905?
Leonie.

Modified; It's the shirt collar I was refering to when I said it wasn't very high, my grammer leaves something to be desired. ::)

Thank you Jim and Loney Bones for your replies. Thanks for the information about when Thomas Vipond was trading, which narrows it down. I do know the back of the card was blank.
Sorry I didn't give much to go on but I know the person in the photograph went to America in 1907 (never returned) and wondered if he'd perhaps had his photo taken to leave in England with relatives. But I didn't know if there would have been a flower in the buttonhole for that sort of portrait. If it was before 1906 then the photo must have been taken for another reason.
Your estimates of between 1900 and 1905 are very helpful, thank you.

Could the photograph have been a wedding photograph? People wear carnations in their buttonholes today so perhaps that is the reason he is wearing a flower.
Just a thought.

Hi Sarah,

Yes, that occurred to me too but I know he married in 1896 at the age of 21. It's difficult to tell how old he looks in the photo but I think he looks older. I think the suit looks a little shabby for a wedding too. If it was a wedding photo, was it normal to have a photo taken of the groom by himself?

Thanks,
Jill

Hi jill,

May be the suit was the best he could afford? Or it had some special family significance it was a best suit handed down?

I think it could be possible that the a photograph may have been taken of a groom on his own what if his parents had asked for a photograph of just him?

The other idea i had was what if the photograph was from another relations wedding, brother of the groom or could he have been a best man?

As for looking older personally i have found that people did tend to look older in those days in photographs at least in my family.

Any way something to think about.
