Putting leaves on my branches
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hi. Can anyone help?
I have done alot in tracing my relatives but am now trying to put some leaves on my branches - that's to say I am trying to find out more about their professional and personal lives. Many of my ancestors were teachers particularly in Derbyshire. How can I find out what schools they taught at? I have discovered www.historicaldirectories.org but am finding it a bit of a mine field! Any tips anyone?

hello and welcome to RootsChat

Why not post names, d.o.b. and places where your ancestors taught and maybe we can help - or give you tips and ideas where to look for information??

Can you give more details of Thomas???
I can find a couple of Thomas Wilde in Derbys but not born exactly in 1883

Did he have a middle name
What area of derbyshire was he born /did he live???
Did he marry? Wife' name??

You may find information in local newspapers.

I (mainly through local papers) found a wealth of information about 3 schoolteachers (all different  names) - e.g. classes they held during WW1/ churches they were acssociated with/ wedding /funeral reports all kinds of things.

Sorry Suz, yes more info as follow

Thomas Henry Wilde born Chesterfield Derbyshire 02/05/1883. He married Annie Elizabeth Stocks  in 1902 in Chesterfield. She was born circa 1878 in Tibshelf, Derbyshire. They had 5 children Blanche, Thomas, Ethel, Arthur and Geoffrey.

I have found their family names on memorials at St John Baptist Church, Tibshelf. They died 1968 and 1952. But am waiting on reply if the memorial is for Annie and Thomas.

Now that I have found ancestors from one side of the family going back to early 1800's I am trying to find out more. Am I trying to do the impossible?

Will try your idea of searching local papers too.

Stella

ps sorry just realised my husband is logged in - don't mean to confuse you!!

Yes, I have birth certificate.

Back Lane is where the Stocks lived. At the time of his marriage to Annie (have marriage cert too) he lived at Prospect Row Pilsley and at birth (?) Sampson's Row Pilsley. Don't have birth certificates for children.

Thomas Henry mother was Mary Haywood and father (!!) Thomas Wild.

Hi,

I used to subscribe to www.britishorigins.com and they had Teachers Registrations from 1870 to 1948.  Although I never found my Grandmothers record  :'(, I did find her brothers and it gave the schools he had taught at and the subjects he taught.

I have looked at kellys Directory derbys 1912 -it names the master of Pulic Elementaty school in Pilsley as Albert Ernest Wragg but maybe they just named 1 master

the onnly Wild I found mentioned was matthew E Wild junior artificated manager to Pilsley Co;;iery company Ltd beechy Knoll

If you can look at local papers I'm sute you will find something- funerl reports often give history of working life
