Hi Pagen,

I'm still a learner at this but I am going to stick my neck out and hazard a guess (from the cap badge) at Somerset Light Infantry - and judging by the pattern 1914 leather infantry equipment - probably a Kitchener Battalion.

And - if the colouring on the picture was done correctly - it looks like a brass economy issue cap badge.

How did I do guys?

He is a Private - no stripes. Probably taken at home before he left. If that is a steel helmet on his pack it will be the 1915 model, but it did not reach the troops until early 1916. Have you found his medal card/papers? If not, post his name, place of birth and age. If he didn't lie about his age he would not have been sent overseas until he was 19.

Overlapping boards on stone blocks usually equals a hut in a training camp.

I can't see a medal card on Ancestry or National Archives site...although if he didn't go overseas then he may not have got any medals.

Also - more often than not black boots would indicate the picture was taken at home - brown boots were issued for overseas service.  However, as the photo has been colourized we can't be sure the artist got the colour right.

To add to Milly's information about the medal card, I have been unable to find a record for him on Ancestry.
