You certainly have an interesting family.  Yes I agree about the timing of the name change for John.

I think the marriage registration spelling of Malton for Ellen Elizabeth may be the correct spelling.  Did you notice the name being used as a given name for a couple of the descendants?

I am also wondering about the qualifications required in 1852 to teach in South Australia.  Perhaps John had replied to an advertisement for teachers.  I have an ancestor who emigrated in 1852 to teach at Scots Church School in Melbourne.

Will have a search tomorrow to see what else I can find on this family.  I feel many of them may have left South Australia as their names do not appear in the bdm records post marriage.

Cheers
Cando

Hi Cando,

I'm working this branch back at the moment and it is the most eventful one I've found records for so far.  It is an interesting period for this family, as Isaac, the father, had a lamp shop in Jermyn Street, St. James's Palace, London.  However there was a fire in this street, reported on February 9th 1840 and his shop was damaged and stock uninsured. By 1842, Isaac was a debtor. I'm surmising that this event really scuppered the family.

Any other help that you could provide would be just great. I've just emailed a relative, another distant cousin descended from Claud Behenna. He's come across a record saying that a photo was held of James Poole. Based in the UK and this being my first foray into Australia, I'm wondering, if the last school where he was teaching would have a copy, as my cousin isn't sure where the original info came from...

I'm really delighted with this extra information that you've provided, as before this weekend, these ancestors were all just words!

Best wishes, Jimmijam

HI
I did do some googling and found your posts.  the name I was googling was Barreau.  I see you have some connection with the Barreaus in South Australia, via Hills and Everetts.

My family is connected directly to the Barreaus.  There has been a lot of work done on their family and another family connected, the Hamiltons.  You can contact me and I can refer you to others.  I know someone is connected to the Hills and I recognise the Everett name.

Many apologies for not replying, its only been a year! All I can say is that everyso often I go back over different branches of my family tree, and now its time for the Behenna's.

If you read this, please post 2 replies, and then I can send you my email address, as you'll have 3 posts by then, which means we can exchange information via personal messages.

Best wishes, Jimmijam
