1865 NY Census Kings county
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 18:51 BST (UK) »
i am hoping someone has access to the 1865 NY Census for Kings County.  I am trying to find out if my ancestor was a Union Veteran of the Civil War.  Want to join Daughters of Union Veterans and this is the last link I need.

Frederick Meier (also spelled as Meyer) was born abt 1825 in Germany . He was married to Dora Burgess.

in 1860 they reside in Ward 8, district 2 of Brooklyn, Kings Count. Frederick was a laborer
in 1870 they resided in the 22nd ward of Brooklyn. retired grocer.
in 1878 and 1880, they lived at 381 11th street, Brooklyn.

They did have realestate in both census worth betwen $800 and $2000 .

The family in 1865 would have looked like this.
Frederick age 40ish
Dora age 35-40
Caroline age 10
Anna Age 5
Dora age 8

Thankyou so much for any assistance or ideas of how to confirm my Frederick was in the Civil War.

Civil war info- Frederick Meier enlisted Oct 12, 1864 in Brooklyn in the Fourth Regiment of Heavy Artillery
George William Burke.. my missing link!! son of Wm Burke & Mary Jane Stone/Morris

Maybe you've seen this already, but the 1865 Census is available here:  http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;c=1491284;t=browsable;w=0  Unfortunately, it's not indexed, so a lot of slogging through would be involved.

I was trying to determine how many people with the same name and the roughly same age were living in that part of New York.  That could help decide the odds for the 1864 enlistment being your Frederick.

Could this be your Frederick in 1860, rather than the one you have noted:
1860 New York Ward 8 District 1, New York, New York
Frederick Meyer, age 40, born about 1820 in Germany, Grocer
Dora, wife, age 36, born about 1824 in Germany
Theodore Goldanstine, age 27, born about 1833 in Germany, Clerk

In New York City in 1860, there were 6 Frederick Meyer's born within 5 years of 1825.

For Brooklyn, 1860, there was one Frederick Meyer, born 1820.

There weren't any born around that time with Meier spelling.

Were Civil War pensions only for the wives of the soldiers?  Did Frederick pass away prior to Dora?  Then she could have received a pension.

If pensions were for either the soldier or the wife, the family should have received a pension.

We could have a look for a pension if you might have the date he died, please?

Update for Civil War Pension:
there were no Meyer/Meier's with a widow named Dora who were living in New York.

I know the 1860 is correct for 1860 ward 8, district 2 as the daughters are all there with the same ages as the 1870 census.  I have my ancestress's marriage record and birth so i know the dates are correct.

I have not found a civil war pension even though Dora lived longer than Fred. I have her in Brooklyn Directories as the widow of Fred in 1the 1888, 1890 and 1897 directories for Brooklyn.  I have to believe he died between 1880-1880.  Just have not been able to get a dr yet.

Not a lot of people used the name Meier. ( have seen Dora the daughter's signature and her death record as Meier).  However, i have seen it in the census as Meyer.

The children of Dora and Frederick were: (this has helped me in narrowing them down in the census in 1860)

Caroline b. 1855
Dora b. 1857
Anna b. 1860
Pauline b. 1867

I think that is him as it says he was 38 years old and that would make him the right age and there is a gap in children from 1860 until 1866.  I want to confirm in the census that he was a vet. i have no other proof that says my Fred served. My grandmother said she had ancestors in the civil war and this is the first one i can actually come close to proving was in it.

I found that he is not in the 1865 Brooklyn Directory.  He possibly was not home and still in the war at that time.

I am hoping Famiy search gets to indexing 1865 cenus.  That would be a great help.

Thanks for the ideas- Kristin
