Greenock Cemetery Look-up
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 15:24 BST (UK) »
From a family letter I have this inforamtion....

Dec 1843
"Grandmother was living with us for a bout 8 months and died in May last."

If someone would be willing to lookup a ??? Hunter or Mary Ross who died May 1843 I would truly appreciate it. (I am not sure if it was Grandma Hunter or Grandma Ross.  I do not have Grandma Hunter's first name.)

My other Hunters are buried in Lair 386, class 1, section L with whom she was living with in 1843.

Or could someone let me know what is the charge to make a request to the cemetery and if the below address is correct?

Burial Grounds Officer
Greenock Crematorium
1 South Street
Greenock PA16 8UG
Phone (01475) 715658
Fax (01475) 730345

Thank you,

Stephanie

These are the closest matches I could see in the local papers...

Margaret Cowan, widow of Robert Hunter, merchant, Greenock, died at Montreal, on 9th
June 1843. (Greenock Advertiser 28.07.1843)

Jane Boyd, widow of Robert Hunter, Port Glasgow, died at Helensburgh on 14th April
1843 (Greenock Advertiser 18.4.1843)

Hi Stephanie
if she died in 1843
she would probably been buried in the old cemetery in Inverkip street
as the Greenock cemetery did not open untill 1846
this link is pictures of the old cemetery

Hi Hibee,

Unfortunately, neither ladies are her  :-[

Could you please tell me is there an online membership to access the Greenock Advertiser.  If it is not accessable online, would you be willing to look up two more :)

This is what I have...

22 Feb 1848
"Never was so many failures in large houses as has been the last six months you will learn from Daniel that our two Uncles have died .  both within a very short time of each other - I attended Uncle Johns Funeral but never heard of Arch. death until I was up at that time."

So, I am looking for Archibald and John Hunter from Aug 1847 to Feb 1848.  Archibald would have died first.

I would truly appreciate it

Steph
