RAF - WW2
« on: Monday 24 August 09 14:38 BST (UK) »
Hi Can anyone please help me. I have some photographs of my father who served in the RAF in WW2, I think in North Africa.
I am trying to find out what regiment he was in and where the photo (2nd one) was taken.
I would be extremely grateful for any information anyone can help me with as he died when I was very young and would love to know as much as possible about his life.
P.S Can anyone tell me how to find his service number as you seem to have to provide this when you apply for service records.

Thank you

In the first picture, they all have the double propeller on their arms which means that they had the rank of Leading Aircraftman. They don't have any badges on their lapels which means that they are not aircrew.

There doesn't seem to be any other features in the photos that can tell us anything really.

What was his full name. Do you happen to know when he joined up/left?

And though having a service number is useful it is NOT completely necessary. Fill in the form as much as possible, especially date of birth and FULL name. And any other details you can think of. And request photocopies of the original file.

Hi Kyt,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I am very grateful. The pictures are a bit of a mystery as there is not much to go on as you say.
My Fathers full name was Francis Joseph Tyler. He was born in Burford, Oxfordshire, but moved to Worthing, West Sussex before WW2, so not actually sure where/when he joined up
Thanks for the note about the service number, I will get on to tracking down his services records now that I know I dont actually need his service number.

Thanks again.
