Ewin McInnes birth Look Up

I am looking for any information re

Ewin McInnes born about 1812 (also known as Owen & Hugh)
Emmigrated to Adelaide Australia on the Neptune which was quarantined in Ireland (origianl boat was the Hercules)
Died: 4 August 1886 South Australia

Ewin's wife was Mary?

from the ship records he left behind his widowed mother Catherine McInnes and they lived on North Uist.

They lost a Child  Ann who was born in about 1847 but died in Cork when the ships was quarantined.

Another daughter Flora born about 1852 died on board ship.

Trying to find his birth in Scotland and possible his marriage to Mary in Scotland in

If not:
Can you tell me what year they left Scotland?
Did his wife predecease him?
Do you know where the children were born.
Did they have other children?
Was it never mentioned on any documents which part of Scotland he was from (census etc.)?
Do you know he was from North Uist or was it just that he sailed from there?

In answer to your query, this is how my information looks

Ewin (Hugh, Owen) and Mary    Ewin born about 1812 in Cladach Kylis, North Uist, Scotland   Mary born about 1822 Houghary, North Uist

Mary is listed on the 1851 census of North Uist, as residence  HOUGHARGY, NORTH UIST, SCOTLAND  and as the head of the household  as a "Cottager" with her two daughters Harriet, and Anne.  It is believed her maiden name was McInnes as records of the marriage show 1851 and on the Census it has her listed as a single women.

 Anne died when " THE HERCULES" was quarantineed in Hawbeliene, Cork, Ireland with an outbreak of Typhysus and Smallpox.  Harriet died in childbirth in Mount Pleasant, South Australia.  Flora died at sea on the Neptune.

Her husband Ewan was on the 1851 Census with his mother Ketty McInnes.

Mary was residing at Henley Park  when she died.  She died at the Desitute Assylum in Adelaide.

Ewin Mcinnes left Campbelltown in Arglyshire in Scotland on the Hercules.  His place of residence was Cairinish on the Lord MacDonald Estate in the Parish of North Uist the County of Inverness.

 The Hercules had an outbreak of Typhus and Small Pox so was Quarantined on the Isle of Haulbowline in Cork Ireland.

Ewin and wife Mary were assigned to travel on the "The Neptune" which arrive in Port Adelaide via Plymouth on the 25th October 1853.

He died in 1886 Southwark, South Australia

Mary Died 1909 Henley Park, South Australia

Ann, Harriet, and Flora born in North Uist...
Ann died in Haulbowline, Cork, Ireland from the smallpox/Typhus outbreak
Harriet died in Mount Pleasant South Australia complications of childbirth
Flora died at sea on board the "Neptune"

Other children Catherine (Kate), Phillip, Marion and William born South Australia

The Highland and Immigration Society (HEIS) records that Ewin is the brother of Alexander and that the majority of his friends immigrated to Australia some time ago that Ann who died Haulbowline grandmother Catherine Mcinnes a widow is still in North Uist.



I was interested to know if you have any additional information or are connected to this Family.

I have no connection with your family. My roots are South Uist but I periodically look through other's requests to see if I can help in any way. I have records of different things to do with Uist and I have some transcribed census records for North Uist.

Have you not been able to get a scottish birth cert. for the children which would give Mary's maiden surname?

I have had a look in my archives and think I may have found your relatives?

Ewen MacInnes of Caranish wed Mary MacInnes of Houghary 03 Jun 1851 Church of Scotland, registered in the parish of Kilmuir, N Uist.

However, this would suggest that the children listed on 1851 census were born wrong side of sheets & would tie in with Mary recorded as single.

I couldn't find any birth entries for Harriet & Ann unfortunately which leaves a ? as to whether Ewen was their father??

I have never been able to find a birth record for the 3 children but they are recorded as Ewan's children on the H.I.E.S and Harriet's death records I think if memory is correct...record Ewan (Owen) as her Dad. so that's probably the best I can do at this stage.

Hi Cheran,

At least you have a marriage date now.

In the days pre 1855 it wasn't actually the births that were recorded but the baptisms/christenings but if you were lucky the birth date was alongside. If they weren't baptised/christened then there will be no record.
 
The other thing is that their word would have been taken as fact whether or not Ewen was the biological father.

Do you know if Alexander was married and name of wife and kids and I will look for them?

I've been through 1841 census to see if I can find anything.

In Houghary where Mary was in 1851 there are no MacInnes families, not even one person.

I noticed on 1851 Ewen had a sis married to Angus MacPhail. I couldn't find a marriage entry and can't work out if the daughter Peggy/Margaret is the one married to Angus although it gives her maiden name? Seems the case. They don't make things easy our ancestors. I couldn't find baptisms for the kids either.

Looks like Alexander is on 1851 Caranish:

Names seem consistant with your family names. Again, couldn't find marriage or births but I think some of my info. is patchy (bits missing)?

It looks like Mary was in Heisker as a F.S. aged 25 in 1841 for a MacDonald family. Allan MacDonald 40, Farmer. There are 16 people there.

Angas McPhail and Margaret (Peggy) we think were married around 1843 as there first child Catherine was born about 1844?  They 2 came out to Aus on the "Hercules" with other members of the Mcphail family i.e. brothers of Angas and the McInnes family i.e. her brothers...   It is a valuable info in the records of them leaving.

Alexander Mcinnes  (born about 1813) and his wife Mary (Marion) (married about 1832) on board and the brother of Ewan  with their children Roderick (Rory) (b: abt 1836), Margaret (b: abt 1838), Janet (abt 1840/1841) , Donald (b: abt 1845/1846), Catherine (abt 1847/1848)

Mary (Marion) died at Sea on board the "Neptune" which is the ship they were transferred to. 
I am not sure about the Alexander with a wife Ann where they fit?

We think the 1851 census with Hugh (Ewan)  (the Gaelic Ewan can become Hugh or Owen) Catherine(Ketty) his mother dies April 1866 

I think the Samuel Barr was a servant  as from the 1851 census but I think others record as a child...

We have Catherine (Ketty) McDonald (b about: 1781 dies 1866) recorded as a Farmers's widow in the 1851 census married to Finlay McInnes (b: abt 1770 died abt 1845) (Finlay becomes Phillip and Owen and Mary call a son Finlay (Phillip) here in Sth Aust.

I haven't found any more re another son Ranald .... possibly he immigrated to Canada?

I am possibly confusing you even more... I think I am getting confused with the family all over again.


Can you give me the reference for the 1841 census with Hugh and Catherine on it?  I will do another search and try to get a copy of that one.
