COMPLETED: Would like some help with deciphering a couple of words - please!

Hello,
I would greatly appreciate some help with deciphering a few words on an 1887 marriage certificate printout.

1. The groom's mother's maiden name (item 2 in the first completed row in the final column). I first thought Canty or Garty or Lanty? But the first letter doesn't look like the Gs, Cs or Ls elswehere on the document. And it looks like a dot for an 'i' above the word... Any ideas appreciated!

2. The birthplace of the groom (first box under the heading 'Birthplace'). It looks like 'Melbourne' to me, but I didn't expect that - had thought it would be UK or Ireland. I would appreciate anyone confirming if they read it as Melbourne too, or can see any other possibilities.

3. Finally, the bride's mother's maiden name (item 2 in the second completed row in the final column). I read it as 'Anderson'. Am I right?

CARTY  (?) -maybe for the Grooms mum's maiden name.
Anderson -I would agree for the Brides mums maiden name.
Melbourne -I would agree for the Grooms birth place .

A very informative marriage cert -is it a NZ cert ?

Mother of Groom I get "Carty"

Birth place I get as Melbourne.  I'm a bit confused where it's from.  Is this Wellington England, or NewZealand?

You thought it would be England, would it not be Melbourne Derbyshire?

I reckon the bride's mother is Anderson as you have.

Hi

As this is an NZ certificate it's not surprising to find an Australian birthplace on it.  Lots of people "stopped off" in Australian on their way over to NZ from various parts of the UK.  Some never even planned to go to NZ, but found that Australia did not live up to expectations so they moved on.  If the mother was close to delivery, it is likely they waited in Melbourne for the birth and then moved on as planned.

Right, if it's a New Zealand Wellington certificate, Melbourne Victoria sounds very likely.

I looked on Google News archive over the weekend as loads of Melbourne Argus entries have just been added.  There were entries from New Zealand too, and I was stunned among the number of possible family members made the jopurnet Melbourne to New zealand &/or back.

I wondered if the odd ones had but there were a good number. (SHippping News, cabin passengers given.)

Too true Emms.... it was a very popular shipping route between NZ and Aus.... still is 

Depending on the timeframe as well, a lot of soldiers went from Melbourne to NZ to fight in the Waikato War, and then there were the miners who went from the goldfields of Australia to the goldfields of NZ.  As a result there were families split between the countries and people travelled over and back a fair bit.

And yes, it is a NZ certificate. They certainly are very informative, once you can workout the handwriting!
