OLD MAPS FOR KILLAMARSH ADDRESS
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 08:57 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
I am trying to sort out where my Johnson Family lived.
These addresses were given from 1911 onwards.
Can anyone tell me if Loch Hill was on Ashley Lane Killamarsh, also if Ashley Lane was near into Sheffield Road.

Cheers,

Pat

There is a Bunkers Hill off Ashley lane, I would think Ashley lane is about half mile from Sheffield Rd

Hi
Could it be Lock Hill rather than Loch?
There seems to be a Lock Hill in Killamarsh - hard to pin down on a map but if you Google it someone claims to have lived "at the bottom of lock hill in Barracks yard ( 12 Nethermoor Lane to be exact)".

Nethermoor Lane runs from Sheffield Rd to Ashley Lane, though they don't seem to join. See www.streetmap.co.uk/map
You can also see Ashley Lane at www.old-maps.co.uk and if you find where Nether Moor is marked, just below Belk Lane (now called Sheffield Rd I think) there is a Lock marked on the canal I guess. That is an 1892 map so a bit older than what you want but it might give you an idea of the place.

Google maps is worth a go too because you can look back and forth between the satellite and the map view. You can put in that 12 Nethermoor Lane address and see where it is.

Thanks to all for their help with the Killamarsh Maps.   I don't seem to be having a lot of success with them, but shall keep trying.

Cheers,

Pat.

I lived in Killamarsh and would definitely say that the stretch of Sheffield Road from the Nethergreen Club to the Canal lock was always known as Lock hill.

I have no local knowledge, but this site has proved useful - http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=5&lat=56.0000&lon=-4.0000&layers=7&point=0,0 - just put killamarsh in the search box and, eventually, a range of old OS maps becomes available.
