47th Foot - How do I find more information of relation?
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 20:57 BST (UK) »
I've been given information that my Great, Great Grandfather (William Newton) was serving with the 47th Foot in 1861. He was born in Shepton Mallet and I'm trying to find out how I can confirm this information and possibly gain more?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you can get to Kew you can look for his service papers. These are filed according to the date of discharge. As you have his regiment (assuming he did not transfer to another one) you should only have to look in one or two places – 1855 to 1872 and 1873 to 1882.

If you cannot get to Kew Findmypast will be putting WO97 online by 2011. If his papers have not survived you will certainly find him the Muster Books and Pay Lists for the 47th foot for 1861. You can then work forwards and backwards to research his service.

The army did not record FH information in this period. The musters will tell you the town/fort he was in on the first day of each month, so you can use that information to look for BMDs in the churches he served near.

You can also look in the overseas/regimental BMDs in Findmypast.
