James Henry CLIFT b. 1839 where did he go?
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 13:28 BST (UK) »
James Henry Clift son of John & Elizabeth Clift baptised 1839 in St Charles Martyr Plymouth can be found on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 in St Charles but then I can find not trace of him.  There is a possible marriage in 1866 in Plymouth.
I can find no death for James and I can not find him on a later census after 1861.
I am starting to wonder if he emigrated?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thereis a James Clift in the Royal Navy in 1881, although he is from Millbrook, I suppose it is a possibility ,as Millbrook is very near to Plymouth.James Clift is an unusual name, so it may be worth a look.

Hi Pauline

I am descended from John Clift who married Jane Lark at Marhamchurch, Cornwall in 1798.

I have never had any luck unravelling the Clift families of Marhamchurch - I did family groups - took details from graves but never found the answer.

I am descended from the son of John & Jane, John Clift b. 1802 at Marhamchurch who later moved to St Charles Martyr, Plymouth.  My branch of the family then moved on to Brixham, Devon.

I see you have Devon and Cornwall Clift connections - I hope there is a link.

This may be a stab in the dark...our family tree has a James Henry Clift born in Virginia in 1839. He married our ancestor in Chihuahua, Mexico, and died in Cusihuiriachi, Chihuahua, Mexico in 1903.

I realise that this is an old post but the Poor Law Unions Gazette 4th January 1879 has the following

WAKEFIELD UNION
James Henry Clift 38 years of age born at Plymouth, stout, dark hair and whiskers, shabbily dressed, height 5ft 6 inches. Has a scar over his right eye which shows plainly. Wife and 2 children.

I would check that out to see if the wife and any possible children help to rule him in or out
