Lost in Queensland (I think!!)
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 11:33 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
As I have been told. I can, but try to ask all you wonderful people.

I am trying to trace the whereabouts of my ancestors George Pierpoint and family between the time they landed in Brisbane in 1866 and the next reference I can find for them in Stanthorpe in 1878. They emigrated on a free passage to become railway navvies, but I have no way of knowing whether that is what they actually did. They certainly became a well known family of pioneers in Stanthorpe in the 1880s.

It suddenly struck me that if I had the same problem in the UK I would look at the census and then birth certificates of the children to locate the family between census dates. I have found some of the children on the historical Queensland BMD lists, but no detail is given. I then discovered that I would need to win the lottery to buy the birth certificates which should solve my problem.

Hence my question: Is there anyone out there who is researching the same family who has the relevant certificates and who would be willing to share them with me? I would be eternally grateful.

The children of George and Harriet Pierpoint born in Australia are:
Harry born 18th October 1867
Joseph born 16th March 1870
Harriet born 1st November 1872
John Thomas born 31st August 1875
Lewis George born 31st August 1875
(The D of B were kindly given to me by the Stanthorpe Museum). As you can see the details from the birth certificates would give me the information I am looking for.

Thanks Jenn.
It is a fact I can add to my research. It's a start and I can eliminate the area.

Do the indexes identify the area?

Tofgem,
Have you considered purchasing just one or two of the children's birth certificates? At least the info they contain may help a bit.  :-\

And something I know absolutely nothing about (but someone might) - school admission registers may be worth checking. I wonder what, if any, details they give about families. Also I have no idea which schools and dates are included or even if the Pierpoint children attended school.

Electoral rolls - once again depends on dates and if they are registered to vote.

You might want to have a look here to check:

Hi Ruskie
One certificate would help, but Australian certificates are over twice the cost of those in the UK and I consider those expensive. I know that they give a fair amount of information, but.....
Perhaps when the pound recovers ??? ??? ??? I might save up for one, that would help (except that knowing my luck I would choose the wrong one to give me the best information).

Hi all...

I'll put my hand up for Harriet Pierpoint (married Skeates). She would be my Aunt's grandmother. Unfortunately, she never knew too much about her father's side of the family till recently.
George would have had to pay of his family's passage for about two years service.... but where???? As for Stanthorpe... James (s/o George) obtained first land there in 1878.  The 1903 electrole roll has James, John thomas & Samuel as blacksmiths (maybe working with the mine) with George as a labourer & Harry a storeman. 1905 role is pretty much the same. One of the Pierpoint's had a successful sawmill in Stanthorpe.
On whole the family was very quite with little new articles. It isn't till about the 1880's till the family make the news. Visit TROVE and you can find online newpapers and some photo's.
Hope there is some info that might help ...

Have a happy Christmas all...  :D :D

Hi,

A little bit of info about George.

Queensland Horse and Cattle Brands Index 1872-1899
George Pierpoint registered cattle brand 8JZ on 8th March 1879 with Certificate No 14886.  The run/farm was at Stanthorpe with the nearest PO being Stanthorpe also.

Queensland Miner's Rights and Business Licences 1870-1884
George Pierpoint had miner's licence No 2050 issued on 11th July 1880 for the Stanthorpe gold fields.
