This from Michael Raven's "Shropshire Gazetteer" the entry for St. Martins
"Just to the NE of St.Martin's is Ifton where there was a colliery which in 1928 provided employment for 1,357 men and on this count was the largest mine ever in Shropshire. It closed in 1968, but the Miner's Welfare Institute still stands and has become the village hall."
