Bottradon on 1861 census
« on: Friday 21 August 09 20:38 BST (UK) »
Hopefully I have attached the 1861 census for Andrew Dugan and his family, Michael being his father. 2nd line of the census. Can you figure out if it is Bottradon they are from? And where is Bottradon as it doesn't actually exist?
Thanks for looking

Sorry,

I can't figure that one out but you might try this search site http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/

Play around with the search parameters and you might hit on something.

If you can figure out the placename on line 3 it may be near your elusive Bottradon.

Dara.

The place name on line 3 is Dareybrode, which also does not exist. Lots of people are looking for Bottradon and I can't help feeling that there must be someone out there who must know what it means. Thanks for your help, will check out your link.

cant find any place name in English that even sounds like Bottradon - closest I can think of is some sort of misheard Bundoran...

another idea would be if the place name was in Irish - i.e. Bothra Dun

I cant see any place name that fits that at the moment ... but it may be an idea to check out

Dún the Irish for fort, I dont know what Bothra means (if its an Irish word), Bóthair ( pronounces bo her) is the Irish for road

Hi

According to irishtimes.com placenames there is Botera (Lower and Upper) in Tyrone - sounds close to Bottra(don).

Best wishes

Aidem

Verry difficult to know what this place is supposed to be- Portbraddon in County Antrim would sound similar.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

following on from the earlier Portbraddon idea .. how would Portadown spoken in a strong Co. Armagh accent should to an English census enumerator ?
