Scarborough 1900s
« on: Friday 21 August 09 20:20 BST (UK) »
Hi I was just looking for a bit of background on what Scarborough might have been like in the 1900s. I have just discovered a rather shocking case of child neglect in my family which made the Scarborough Magistrates Court and I wondered if poverty and neglect was a common problem there around the early part of the last century. Anything would be great. Thanks Sorcha

My family have lived in Scarborough since the mid 1800's.  Yes there were a lot of poor people, remember it was a fishing town and income was dependant on the catch and the weather.  From what I can gather, there was very much a community spirit, everyone knew everyone else ( or was related) and they did help each other out, at least that is the impression I have got from my family.

Thanks for your reply, hmmm I know everyone knew that part of my family, especially the police, who called them the dirtiest set of tinkers they had ever had the misfortune to know! Apparently they were proffesional beggars amongst other things. Thanks again Sorcha x
