Ballymena Street, Belfast 1901
« on: Wednesday 02 March 05 20:51 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a 1901 Census entry for My Grandad: Arthur Couchman b.1900 (parents: Arthur Couchman and wife Jane-nee Brennan) of Ballymena Street, Belfast.

I can't find a record of this street anywhere, although I have been assured by PRONI that the street did exist, in the registration area 'Urban No.3, which took in Upper Shankil and Crumlin Road.
I've tried all sorts of searches to find this address, can anyone help or suggest anything.

Thanx for checking Anthony, this is really puzzling me.  My Grandfather was born in Ballymena St, although his father was in the army (possibly British or South African), and his mother was Irish (Co.Fermangh).  With this background, would they have been excluded from participating in the Irish Census do you think?  Any pointers/advice received with gratitude, as I'm not getting anywhere on this!

In 1912 'Couchman' family lived in 15 Coolderry Street.  Would you have any info for that address? Thanx again.

Hi. What do you have that says he was born in Ballymena St and, what year was he born.
He could have been living in a Army Barracks when the Census was taken.
You could e-mail the PRO and ask them about the Census for anyone living in a Army Barracks at that time.

I have looked at all the streets that start with Bally? in the 1896 Directory can't find any name for Couchman, sorry, if i can help you in anyway please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Anthony, you've been so helpful. I'll email PRO re: army barracks, so fingers crossed.  My grandad's birth cert. shows date & place of birth as 21/7/1900, 22 Ballymena St.(his father, also A Couchman's place of residence at the time was S.Africa).
Thanks once again!

Going through old posts and noticed this one. 1911 census just put online (free) and looks like Arthur Couchman and family here:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/St__George_s/Dorchester_Street/162826

Happy searching!
