Returning to this thread now we have a definite for Marion Forrest ~

Although there is a tree (http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kevinreed/pafn209.htm) , I'm always sceptical and would never take anything on them as fact without checking for myself.

This looks like her baptism record on the IGI:

20 April 1817, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire

Marion Inglis Forrest d/o Alexander Forrest and Elisabeth Morton.

Her death is recorded in Scotlands People

24 March 1897, Aged 81 at the Combination Poor House, Stirling. Usual residence  - Kilsyth.

The death cert notes that Alexander was a tailor.

Hamilton Smith, coal miner, married to Marion Forrest  died at 62 High Street,  Kilsyth on 11 January 1891, aged 74.

His parents were William Smith, labourer and Catherine m.s. McLaren, both deceased.

I'm not sure about the McLaren surname on Hamilton Smith's  death cert because of this entry in the 1841 and misleading info of a couple marrying in 1825 in Midlothian:

1841
Croftfoot, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire

William Smith, 55, labourer, b. Ireland
Catherine Wood, 50, b. Ireland
John Smith, 20, coal miner
Hamilton Smith, 20, coal miner
William -do-, 15, coal miner
David -do-, 14, coal miner
Mary -do-, 11
Ann -do-, 9
Alexander -do-, 6

All children b. Lanarkshire

Note that in the 1841, ages for those of 15 and over were usually rounded down to the neares 5 year age band - 15= 15-19;  20 = 20-24; 50 = 50-54; 55=55-59,  etc.

William, son, 24, coal miner, b. Old Monkland
Agness, daghter in law, 19, b. ? Lanarkshire
David,s,  22, coal miner, b. Shotts
Ann, d, 18, tambourer, b. Shotts
Alexander, s, 17, coal mier, b. Shotts

Right. Smith is not the easiest to track down  :D

Managed to follow up Alexander Smith, younger brother of Hamilton.  He married a Christina Mair in Cambusnethan in 1858.

Parents given as William Smith, labourer, deceased and Catherine, m.s. Woods.

So it looks as if the surname on Hamilton's death cert was wrong. This happens occasionally because the informant is unsure/makes mistakes.

As Catherine appears to be still alive in 1858, I'll do a qucik check but I've then got to go off for a while.

Note that the tree link that Monica found has the wrong information for Hamilton Smith's parents. It's always best to do an independent check.

Hi Gadget,
I have a family connection with Mary Smith, who married John Mcculloch in 1850.
As you have obviously looked at the family I would be grateful if you have any info on the death of Catherine Smith (nee Wood or Woods). I have searched the Scottish records with no success. No death for William either, probably between 1841-51.
I agree Hamilton's dc gives wrong mother surname. As I only have info on Hamilton, Mary and Alexander, grateful for any scraps.
Have you a family link with them ?
Thanks,
John
