William and Loveda Alcock Family, Naas (formerly called Rosetown)

Hello from the U.S.A.  I am research a maternal family line; the family of William and Loveda Alcock Barrington who were "Scotch-Irish" Methodist tenant famers in or near Rosetown (now called Naas), County Kildare.

This is what I know:
William H. Barrington, b. 16 June 1795 (or 6 Jun 1795)
Circa 1816, he married Loveda (or maybe Loveday) Alcock, who died before 1840

Children:

* William Henry, Jr. b: 11 Mar 1833, Ireland; d:  11 Sept 1924, Crystal Lake, Town of Dayton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin (served in the Confederate Army, Mississippi regiment during the War Between the States)
 * Richard, b: 19 Aug 1834, Ireland; d: 10 Apr 1907, Crystal Lake, Town of Dayton, Waupaca Co, Waupaca, Wisconsin  (served in the Grand Army of the Republic during the War Between the States)
* Caroline, b: Ireland; d: at sea, 11 Nov 1853
* Henry, b: Ireland; d: at sea, Nov. 2, 1853
* Catherine, b: 1843, Ireland; d: 1924, U.S.A.
* Jane, b: 1845, Ireland; d: 1921, U.S.A.
* Tamara. b. Ireland

After their mother Loveda Alcock Barrington died, the older children were
bound out to neighbors and worked as household servants.  The boys worked on estates.  As a result of the potato famine, the family emigrated to the U.S., one or two of the children at a time.  Alexander may have emigrated first.

I am descended from Alexander Barrington.

Thought I'd reply after seeing the reference to Rosetown (now called Naas). This may be misleading as Rosetown is in Newbridge which is situated appox 5 miles from Naas.
Naas has never been called Rosetown.

Thank you for the clarification.  The Rosetown-now-named-Naas information was from an older Barrington Family history compiled by my maternal grandmother's generation.  I'll update my records accordingly and notify the others in our U.S. family association.  Sincerely, Jean E. The birth dates of William and Loveda Alcock Barrington's children are from a family tree compiled by their grandchildren (my maternal grandmother's generation) in Wisconsin, USA. Those grandchildren got the dates from their living grandparents and their own parents, the children of William and Loveda.

Plus, I confirmed some dates from printed newspaper death notices from the time and US military records for the 3 Barrington brothers, sons of William and Loveda, Wisconsin residents, who served during the War Between the States (US Civil War) - 2 on the side of the Union and 1 as a Confederate.

Other dates I confirmed from cemetery records and grave markers in Waupaca County cemeteries.

The compiled Barrington Family data on William and Loveda Alcock Barrington was printed in a Barrington Family Association publication (from the 1950s, I think) that has been passed down to succeeding generations. Unfortunately my copy from a great aunt, Alice Barrington Proost, was destroyed in a fire.

Thank you for your list of some possible Barrington family information for Kildare.

My immediate Barrington kin all left Kildare in the late 1840s through the early 1850s. Some drowned on the on the trip across. The rest settled in Wisconsin, USA.

My understanding is that William and Loveda Alcock Barrington farmed while in Kildare. I don't think they owned their land, however. After Loveda died, the older children went into service at large estates in the area, until they had earned enough for ship passage to the USA. The first who arrived in America saved some of their earnings to help pay the ship passage of the rest of the family. Alexander, the patriarch, his daughter Elizabeth, her husband John Dillon and their children were the last to immigrate.

A typical Irish immigration story for those times.

I would too after seeing references to Athy among the posts!

There are 2 Rosetowns in Co Kildare.
