miners debt book/ Durham
« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 20:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if anybody has seen/ or access to the debt book. This was records of when mining agents were made to go around the country to sign up miners in the late 1870's,
trying to find out the exact date that Joseph and Emily Trenerry came to the region from Cornwall to Howden-le-wear, also William Henry Trenerry (Son) his wife Mary J. also Samuel Trenerry (Son) who married Sarah Raine (who was from Howden-le-wear).

I would be very gratefull if anybody could help.
Regards

Are you refering to this from http://www.durham-miner.org.uk
Agents went to Cornwall and signed men to work, their names entered into a Debt Book as they were given advances of between two and eight pounds to travel to their nominated coal mine. This was to be retained from their wages.

There would not be one debt book, each agent would have his own book and if any survive they could be in the Durham Record Office.

Hello Tinner,

Just realized that your posting was a year old, but did wonder if you ever found the Debt book for Durham?

Kind regards
