It still confusing for me (contradictory informations)
In the past when records were with NZDF you can order for free one record a year. Now it seems you have to pay $25 for each record you order (according to the letter I received today from the Nat Archives (copy below)

Thank you for your New Zealand Defence Force enquiry.
All New Zealand Defence Force requests are now being digitised and will take approximately 15 working days to process from receipt of payment.
Please note each New Zealand Defence Force research enquiry is subject to payment of a fee of $25.00. This fee must be paid before we are able to undertake any research or retrieval as follows:
Cheque payable to – Archives New Zealand
International Money Order – Archives New Zealand
Credit Card (Mastercard, Visa or Bankcard only) – Archives New Zealand
If paying by credit card, please include the following details:
Name of credit card holder
Card Type
Card Number
Card Expiry Date
Please note, we cannot guarantee the security of emails so suggest you post or fax these details to us at the contact details below, or phone between 9am and 1pm.
This fee includes up to 40 pages. Any additional pages cost $0.50. You will be contacted if this applies.
Please be aware that we do not have the resources to do extensive research on behalf of our clients. If you require this kind of assistance you will need to employ a private researcher.
