Samuel Gent /? bpt in Bulwell 1790's
« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 14:23 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find the baptismal record of Samuel Gent, who according to the 1851-71 censuses was born between 1793-96 in Selston.

The Selston PR shows no Samuel Gent/Ghent  bpt for this period, but a likely couple William Gent & Elizabeth Stout/Stant married in Bulwell in 1784 but had 2 children bpt in Selston, Edward in 1784 & Mary in 1788.

So my question is there any record of them having a son Samuel bpt in Bulwell ( or possibly Hucknall Torkard) in the 1790's.

Thanks
John

Hi

I have a Jane Gent who got married in Selston in 1830. There is no trace of her on the NFHS CDs. Selston do not have their records on these CDs.

Selston St Helens is a Norman Church. So I suppose they got BMD there but they are not on the web. Looks like a trip to the archives. I have just checked your profile but you do not say where you are!

Hi John ,

My 4x Gt.Aunt was Elisabeth Stout , but sadly none of the other descendants have supplied any children for them.
Your marriage date tallies with my 27/12/1784.

Perhaps you might look at the surname interests on here . Sometimes you can be lucky

Thanks Jane & Spring, The reason I think possibly William & Elizabeth nee Stout were the parents of my Samuel Gent is based solely on the fact his eldest son was William born 1818, which addmittedly is not much to go on.

Samuel married in 1817 in Woodditton, Cambridgeshire and seems to have been an overseer for the Duke of Rutland there, which suggests he came from a farming family. As to his naming his birth place as Selston,I now suspect he lived there as a child but was infact baptised somewhere else.

Unfortunately as I live in the USA ,  I mostly am reliant on info I can find on-line, I wish Northants. record office on-line service had more info, as does the Norfolk & Essex ones .

Thanks again
John

I am also searching for the parents of Samuel Gent as he is my GG Grandfather via Thomas Gent & Mary Hood; Arthur Gent & Winifred Johnson and Donald Gent & Ethel Hobson.

Hi Sawston,
I take it the Thomas Gent who married Mary Hood, was the son of Samuel & Ann ( nee Payne) bpt 1830 in Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire. I'm decended from his brother, also a Samuel bpt 15/2/1824 in Wood Ditton.

As I said in my original query Samuel Gent Sr seemed to have arrived out of the blue in Wood Ditton and pretty rapidly had set himself up as a farmer of some 500 acres, mainly it seems raising cattle. The puzzle is all the Gent families I've been able to trace around Selston were either miners or agricultural labourers, so how did Samuel get the wherewithal to set himself up like this?

Best
John

Hi John,
Samuel and his family were tenants to the Duke of Rutland and I wonder if he shipped Samuel in from another of his estates to run the ones in Cambridgeshire.  Unfortunately the Duke of Rutland's archives are not available to look at.  My aunt Molly was convinced Samuel was born in Derbyshire not Nottinghamshire.  Mining began in earnest around the beginning of the 1800s and lots of farmers were thrown off their land to make way for the mines.
As soon as I get my Francis Barnett Merlin motorcycle on the road, I'm going to make an effort to crack this once and for all.
Regards
Merlin

These  are the Gents I could find b late 1700's early 1800's born in Selston  on 1851 census
Theophilus Gent y.o.b. 1791
Edward gent  y.o.b. 1798
William Gent 1808

There are a lot of Gents b. Bulwell (on 1851 census)

Your Aunt being convinced Samuel was b Derbys -she is not too far off the mark - at the time Samuel was born  some from Codnor & Loscoe Derbys were married /baptised at Selston Notts

Codnor to Selston is approx 6 miles by road now - but would be much less than that  over the fields

Suz
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England
