Hello Haley

This link will give you information on Grantham Workhouse and where you might look for more records.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Grantham/Grantham.shtml

It is worth exploring the whole site as it has lots of information about the workhouse system  :)

Hi haleyc,

There is a couple of pictures and information about Grantham workhouse in "Bygone Grantham"Volume 2.by Michael Pointer and Malcolm Knapp 1977.pages 32/33.

In 1966 my son was born in Hillview Hospital (a maternity unit)which was built at the back of the old workhouse and you had to go through the original arched entrance to reach it.All the buildings have now been pulled down and a Residential home called Harrison House is now on the site.

The Fox and Hound  was in the Wide Westgate of Grantham which is where our outdoor market is held every Saturday.Morrisons supermarket carpark is round the back of it.

There is a lovely photo in"Bygone Grantham" Volume 2 page 14.

To get some idea how things were, you can look at old maps here http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx

Hi haleyc

The Fox and hounds building is still there today and is now a Mind Charity shop and mens barbers with a music shop at the back which sells cds and videos etc from the 50s upwards.
