Bowers birth records help needed
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 15:47 BST (UK) »
From 1891 census Joseph Bowers was born about 1844 - place of birth Nk, Cheshire and also his wife Elizabeth born about 1845 Nk, Cheshire.  (In 1891 they were living in Hazel Slade, Rugeley, Staffordshire and Joseph was a miner)

On 1901 census Elizabeth gives place of birth as Tapley, Cheshire.

Could anyone please help me interpret this - could Tapley be Tarporley.

Now Cheshire district has been split where would I find the records?

I'm new to this so all clues would be a big help.  ::)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

This could be Joseph's birth:

Joseph Bowers 1845 1st quarter ( ie Jan, Feb or March)
Macclesfield Cheshire
19 155

Do you have his wife's maiden name?

Welcome to RootsChat Blubelle  :) (and Hi Jan)

The 1871 census shows her birth place as 'Hudkinton'.

The nearest soundex to Hudkinton that I can find is Utkinton, which seems to be a chapelry in Tarporley parish
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/utkinton.html

Do you know Elizabeth's maiden name at all?   :)

PS. Joseph's birth place in 1881 and 1871 is Eccles Lancashire

Hi Tati

Do you think that's the wrong one I suggested? If so I'll have another look.

I have no idea, Jan. Just mentioned what I saw on the censuses I looked at. He might well have been from Cheshire after all!  :D

Was Elizabeth called Dilworth by any chance, Blubelle?

I spotted 2 likely marriages for Joseph Bowers to Elizabeth between 1861 and 1871:

1867 - Joseph Bowers to Elizabeth Critchlow at Alton St Peter
1867 - Joseph Bowers to Elizabeth Dilworth at Stoke (Civil marriage)

In 1861, an Elizabeth Dilworth age 14 born Tarporley is living at Penkhull with her sisters Mary and Jane.
(They were already in Penkhull 10 years earlier, parents Joseph and Elizabeth. Her christening is on the IGI at www.familysearch.org)

Hi Tati and Jan

You're quick on the look up!!

No don't know maiden name was hoping to find the marriage record too but don't know date or where.  Presume they might have married before moving to Rugeley first son born 1869 (but not sure if he was first born as there were 2 sisters not listed on the 1891 census who may have been older - 7 children in all)

You've given me something to think about though!!

If it was Dilworth this might be the birth:

Elizabeth Dilworth
1st quarter 1845
Nantwich Cheshire
19 152

According to the 1871 census, Mary J was the first born:

1871
RG10/2819 160 28
Castle Church, Staffordshire
26 Castle St

Joseph Bowers, head, 27, Railway Labourer, b. Lancashire Eccles
Elizabeth, wife, 26, b. Cheshire Hudkinton
Mary J, dau, 4, b. Staffordshire Stoke
Joseph, son, 3, b. Staffordshire Castle Ch
Elizabeth, dau, 6 mo, b. do.

I'm pretty confident I've found the correct marriage but to ascertain Elizabeth's maiden name you'll have to order the birth certificate of one of the children.

Hi all

Thanks so much for your help.  I've learnt so much in just a few minutes.

So far
think the Marriage to Elizabeth Critchlow looks like the right one (had a look on Family Search) and seems to be with the right Joseph from Eccles.  I would never have thought of looking there!!

Children I know of:
Albert Bowers
Arthur Bowers (think he died in a pit accident)
Edith Bowers
Henry Bowers
Joseph Bowers
Virginia Bowers
Emma Bowers
didn't know about Mary J
would never have thought about ordering birth certificate to find maiden name.  Thanks so much :D
