think the Marriage to Elizabeth Critchlow looks like the right one
What makes you say so? The family as we see them in 1871 have a connection to Stoke but not to Alton. Also, there doesn't seem to be an Elizabeth Critchlow born Tarperley on earlier censuses, but there is a matching Elizabeth Dilworth.

Oh well, let's see what the birth cert says  :D

Just had a quick look at the censuses and my guess is that this is the Joseph Bowers/Elizabeth Critchlow couple:

1881 census for Denston, Staffordshire (Alton sub registration district)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/06wp/
RG11/2743 81 12

(The 1861 census shows an Elizabeth Critchlow born Wooton ca. 1835)

Hi Tati

Thanks so much for your investigations I will order a birth certificate and let you know the result.  I can see how easy it would be to go up a blind alley.
All the suggestions have been so useful and given me more leads to follow.
Thanks again to all.

Joseph Bowers remains a bit of a mystery though.

I can't see a Joseph Bowers born ca. 1844 Eccles on earlier censuses.

There is one Joseph Hiram Bowers born ca. 1844 at Lostock Lancashire (christened 11 Aug 1844 at Over Peover Cheshire, mother  Emma) and living at Snelson Cheshire who seems to disappear after 1861 but I'm not sure he's the boy we're looking for...

Hi Tati

Just to let you know Joseph Bowers was from Eccles.  On 1911 census he must have filled it in himself with correct birthplace - Eccles!! not Cheshire!
