Taylor, Wood, Woods, Wigan, Sheffield Downall Green.
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 09:46 BST (UK) »
I am in Edinburgh and a real novice to genealogy. I am having massive trouble getting very far at all with my English ancestors.  :(  My father was John Lysaught Taylor, his father was Herbert Taylor born 1895 ?died in the early 1940's.  Herbert's father was James Isles Taylor, don't know when he died but know he is buried in Downall Green Cemetery in Wigan.  My father (John) Mother was Lilian Wood or Woods born about 1895 ?  When Herbert died, she married his brother Walter.  Lilian died late 1950's.  Any information at all would be wonderful.  :)

Hi Tibby,

This seems to be the reference for Herbert and Lilian's marriage:

Jun 1919 Ecclesall Bierlow 9c 1106

The actual certificate would show her ages and father's names.

In the meantime, I can see only one James Iles Taylor:

1881 census:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/06wm/
RG11/4842 35 63

By 1891 the family are in Pemberton Lancashire and there's a son Walter born ca. 1891. I'll post the details when I have found them in 1901 and confirmed that they also had a son Herbert  :)

Sorry but I don't think I'll be able to pinpoint Lilian's death without having more details - at least a pretty exact date and place of death  :-\

In the meantime I've traced James Iles Taylor back

Birth registration
Iles Taylor Dec 1851 Boston 14 279

1861 census
RG9/2340 72 17
Sutterton, Lincolnshire
Kirton Fen

John Taylor, head, mar, 35, Ag lab
Thomas, son, 11
James Iles do., son, 9
George, son, 7

All born Swineshead

I suspect that this is James' mother in the same 1861 census:
RG9/2339 22 20
Swineshead, Lincolnshire

Thomas Taylor, head, 66, Ag lab, b. Pottershale (something)
Thoda, wife, 63, b. Swineshead - blind
Ruth, dau, unm, 24, Dress Maker, b. do.
Ruth Taylor, dau, in law, mar, 35, **ay Maker, b. Sutterton
John Taylor, grandson, 5, b. Swineshead
William, grandson, 3, b. do.
Mary, granddau, 2, b. do.
Rhoda, granddau, 2 mo, b. Sutterton

According to the 1871 census, at least the grandchildren John and William belonged to the unmarried daughter Ruth. Interestingly, John age 5 was John Iles Taylor - must have been a family name in the Taylor family.
