Thanks for that Althea.

As FAR as my Uncle knows three of the family arrived here, his mother and his grandparents, which makes us wonder if his mother was expecting him on her travels ;)
Where should we look for his birth certificate, sorry if this sounds a dumb question but I'm use to UK records ;) :)
I think the William may well be his Grandfather
I'm going to pass this on to my Uncle

thank you again

Hi All

I've just posted to Ed the Cat's earlier thread - see link above - (won't repeat it all here).   :D

There is though, something "strange" about the passenger list for the vessel "Wellington" which arrived in Invercargill 8 March 1883.

Passengers named "GURTREY" (seems to be a misspelling of GUTTERY ?) are as follows :

Maria - aged 43 (bc 1840)
Maria - aged 20 (bc 1863)
Walter H. - aged 11 (eleven) years (bc 1872).

SO   ... is this Walter H. the son of Maria (aged 43) ... and the brother of Maria (aged 20) ???

[There is a marriage of a "Walter Henry GUTTERY - 1891 - to Elizabeth Jane REED"   ... and a probably death of this Walter (aged 34 ?) in 1901 ? ]

Almost certainly this Walter H. GURTERY (GUTTERY) on the passenger list, is NOT the husband of the Maria GURTERY (GUTTERY) aged 20.

the WWI records say he was born Wario.

Son of Maria Henry (formerly Guttery), of Wilkin St.,

Great find Althea !    :)

Maria GUTTERY married Reuben HENRY - 1889

Question :

Was this Maria GURTERY (GUTTERY)  the "widowed daughter-in-law" of Maria (aged 43) ... or ... her daughter ?
[Perhaps the marriage certificate (1889) will tell if Maria junior was a widow ... and if she wasn't, then that may provide the clue as to why the birth of Harry is (apparently) unregistered ?]

Was his father William? or did only his mother come
School record, Southland
GUTTERY Harry School Wairio
Admission Date 1889
Parent / Guardian William Guttery
(NZSG Index CD)

WAIROA ???     Has this been confused with WAIRIO (South Island) ?

Ed ---   on your earlier thread, I had already mentioned that there was PapersPast link to a "Harry GUTTERY".
It refers to a "Mr GUTTERY" and a "Harry GUTTERY ... and further mentions "Mr. and Mrs. HENRY".
[Mr GUTTERY is said to have been the first resident of the settlement of Wairio (near Nightcaps) and the 1905 article states he is nearly "73" - (so born c. 1832).    Possibly he is the husband of Maria senior  ... and he may have arrived in NZ earlier than 1883 (ahead of the rest of his family) ? ]

Hi Althea

Burials - Wairio

William GUTTERY - d. 1918 - aged 85 (bc 1833)
seems most likely to be the William GUTTERY mentioned in the 1905 PapersPast article with Harry GUTTERY -  (Mr GUTTERY "nearly 73" (bc 1832) ? ).

In the burial plot next to William GUTTERY (d. 1918), is an infant named "Alice M. HENRY - d. 1893 aged 20 months".
Alice M. HENRY appears to be the daughter of Reuben HENRY and Maria (nee GUTTERY).   [Alice Margaret HENRY b. 1892 - parents -  Reuben and Maria :    Death - 1893- Alice Margaret HENRY- 20 months].

Is Alice Margaret then, the grand-daughter of William GUTTERY ?

Mmm ... there is a death for "a Maria GUTTERY in 1905 - aged 70 years - bc 1835" ... was she the wife of William (d. 1918) - she's not buried at Wairio ?

Hi Ed

Just a suggestion.   :)      Rather than your Uncle purchase the death record for Harry GUTTERY,  Harry's marriage record would be a much more reliable source of information (given that Harry himself would have supplied details).
[If ordering the record, be sure to request a "printout" - this gives the maximum amount of information].
