Elizabeth Randolph EPPES of Bedford
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 03:42 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to find the street address for Elizabeth Randolph Eppes, widow of William Isham Eppes.

Her burial record at Holy Trinity gives her address in Jan 1844 as Tavistock Street.  The Times death notice for 10 Jan 1844 notes that the house belonged to her son.

Her granddaughter, Frances Maria Sophia Eppes, was born there on 22 Apr 1844 and baptized at Holy Trinity in Jun 1844.

We believe that the house belonged to William Randolph Eppes, Assistant Deputy Commissary-general for Corfu.

Any assistance in identifying the actual address would be appreciated.

Best, Lili

Do you have the birth certificate of Frances, and the death certificate for her grandmother, which may give an address? The problem with street numbers was that they changed so often

At this point, I just have the Church records.  Suggestion very much appreciated.  So much to learn... would I order them from St Catherine House?

Thanks, Lili

I cannot find the Death Index of Elizabeth Eppes but I do have the Birth Index of Frances Maria Sophia Eppes in April-June quarter 1844 in Bedford RD vol 6 page 36,  (note Ancestry has 2 birth indexes entries page 30 & page 36 looking at the image I think it is 36)

You can order the certificate, online,  from the GRO at Southport, it costs £7.00

I could not find an Elizabeth Eppes on the 1841 census living in Bedford, there is one in Bury St Edmunds Suffolk though. Nor can I find grand-daughter on 1851 census.

My thanks to you all for your assistance.  It is really wonderful to be able to provide a context for why Fanny was born in Bedford and unfortunate to know that they were there because her grandmother was ill and had died.

Does anyone know if there is a historic image of Holy Trinity floating around - I haven't been able to locate one...

Again my thanks.

Hi,

I'm not a expert on England but from my understanding
while doing my research in Bedford i found the following...
Holy Trinity was formed from St Paul in 1839 the in 1896
St Martin was formed from Holy Trinity...so i believe you
should look for St Martin and that will be Holy Trinity church
reformed to that church...you may find a picture then...also
possibly write or email St Martin and see if they have
picture of the Old Holy Trinity...hope that helps...i will keep
trying to help also...Crookedtail

Just google Holy Trinity Bedford. The very first hit is a modern photo of the church

St Martin's Church wasn't built until the late 1880s on Clapham Rd., so can't be the original Holy Trinity Church which was on Bromham Rd.

A postcard depicting the church can be found at http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360169480362#ebayphotohosting . I don't know if it's possible to download it

A different view is at http://www.rootschat.com/links/06x9/
