Hello toddy,

What denomination was John Todd?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Christopher.

As far as I can gather my John Todd was Protestant. He died in 1854 in Scotland so I had no death registered here to tell me his parents or other info.
Any help you could give me would be much appreciated.

Protestant is not a denomination. To search for church records (if they exist) you need to know what religion the family were: Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, etc.
Checked LDS catalogue for Hillsborough and unfortunately they haven't microfilmed any records for that place (only a history of Hillsborough Presbyterian Church).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi toddy,

It looks as though John left Hillsborough before the First Presbyterian Church was built, on its present site, in 1833. The church was completely rebuilt in 1885.

Click to see the Downshire Leases of 1762 on the Ulster Ancestry website as they mention a John Todd with a lease dated 1769.

Thanks for the help Christopher.
My John Todd left Ireland prior to 1819 as this was when his first son was born in Wigtonshire. I think he was also married here after leaving County Down, sadly I cant find a marriage or a birth for him anywhere.

All the best,
                        Toddy

we have DNA samples from a couple of Todd families in Co Down.  If you do a DNA sample for your Todds, perhaps you'll find a match.

HI Toddy,
You sent me your snail mail address. I order you a DNA kit.  If you are a male Todd desc of a male Todd desc of a male Todd, then you are a suitable donor of a DNA test.    When the kit arrives in the mail, you swab the inside of your cheek for 20 seconds and put the swab into an envelope and mail back to the lab.  Six weeks later we have results to compare with the other Todd DNA samples we have analyzed.

Some people pay for the test themselves alone; others ask 4 others to join them in funding the sample.   With 5 people, the cost is $26 US per person.

I just ordered a kit for a Todd family from northern Antrim and two from Co Tyrone.

Here's my email if you want to communicate directly with me about this.
