World War 1 records
« on: Friday 14 August 09 08:06 BST (UK) »
At Christmas last year I bought my grandfather's WW1 war records.

Just wanted to let everyone know that today I looked him up on the Archway site again, and his war records were right there in PDF on the internet for FREE!!

Just one mouse click had the whole lot in front of me AND it was way more than what I was sent in the post.

I couldn't believe it   ;D

Needed to tell everyone. Looks like there are only a few but maybe over time more will be added.

If this is already general knowledge then oops.. I havent been doing any research for ages  >:(  too busy.

They talked about this in latest NZSG MAg
That so far 2000 files have been digitised
They said they get 30-40 requests a day backlog 8wks
once they get a request they digitise them to pdf dowloadable file, and only send paper copies if requested.
$25 per file written reference charge. I thought that still meant we needed to pay, so this is interesting news.
I can't find any names to check if anyone can download them once you have paid???
Bye

If you want someone to try it out on then my grandfather was William Ihaka.. he should show right at the top if you type in both names.

My grandfather's file wasn't the only one that had a PDF link, so I think its for anyone to look at.

Let me know how you get on.

Its a shame they are only digitising ones that have had interest shown in them because the costs would be prohibitive to some people who would love nothing better than to order them, but just cant justify it.

But I still thinks its great to have them out there for everyone to enjoy.

I have only found one with a PDF link :D.....  guess it is better than nothing, so will wait patiently for them to appear and will keep checking Archives.

Thanks for sharing that Tracey  ;D  ;)
now we know what the link and files will look like.

They have an enormous task, but things are really moving getting these and the other shipping files digitised

TraceyNZ,
This Archway file sounds most interesting. I am not familiar with it. How do I access it?
Thanks, Toby.

The search site is
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/

If you enter the words Digitised Record in the search box, you will get the entries that have PDFs attached.

At the end of the results, you will also get a few pages of links to photographs, which I didn't know that Archway had. They are mainly general shots of life and work in NZ, perhaps used for publicity purposes.

Interesting!
