Help/ROBERT THOMPSON
« on: Thursday 13 August 09 17:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to get back a generation in my father's family and to do that I need to aquire a copy of my G Grandfather ROBERT THOMPSON's birth certificate from GRONI, however I have no actual birth date. I know it was c 1863 in the Silverstream area which I think is around Carrickfergus. I know he married my G Granny Maggie Barton on the 20/01/1883 in Larne and he died 17/12/1949.Has anyone got any idea where I could find this out so that I can go ahead and apply for a certificate.I have searched LDS and Emerald Ancestors with no luck and I applied for a Baptism certificate but it does not give actual birth dates on it. I am certain his Mum was Mary Johnston and his father also Robert Thompson. I feel I have hit a brick wall and feel that one of you experts can point me in the right direction. Thanks Faith Butler/Thompson

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so if he was born earlier there will be no birth certificate. In that case it may be that the church record is the only information available to give you an approxiamate date of birth.

You haven't mentioned the church where the baptism took place but civil registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845 so if the parents weren't married in a Catholic church and it was after 1845 you might be able to find their marriage certificate which will get names and occupations of both grandfathers.
There are several records of children born to a Robert Thompson and Mary Johnston, including one in Carrickfergus 1866 (www.familysearch.org)

Hi again, You say there are a number of children born to a Robert Thompson and a Mary Johnstone one of which is in Carrickfergus. I have trawled the LDS site and dont seem to see any of his children. One is Robert my G Grandfather and there were 5 others, Samuel, James, Ellen, Agnes and James.Unless I am looking them up the wrong way. Carrickfergus is probably the right area as on the copy of Roberts Baptisimal certificate it says Silverstream which I believe is the same area.I'll keep hunting!!

If you search by names of parents only the entries come up- the 1866 one in Carrickfergus is Ellenor (perhaps your Ellen?)
