butchers shop 6 market place Abergele 1911
« on: Thursday 13 August 09 17:13 BST (UK) »
Still searching for my great aunt Maggie, who in the 1901 census was single and working as a servant at the Market vault Abergele, a distant cousin has mentioned that it was commom to have a pub and the back and a slaughter house/butchers shop at back.

On the 1911 census there is a Margaret Davies married to Thomas Davis a butcher in Market Place and I wondered if any one has any knowledge of this shop or the family, clutching at straws thinking my Maggie could have married a Davies therefore her name may not have changed.

Thank you

Valerie

Hello Valerie: I think you are clutching at straws. I have a working knowledge of Abergele in the 1980s as a policeman and I do not know of a Market Place.
The main shopping thoroughfare is Market Street and behind it was the beast market which declined and became a very popular sunday open market and is now a Tesco store. This may have been 'Market Place'
I cannot remember the Market vault. I presume that would be a pub. Several pubs still operate in the town centre. Still think of 7 :D

When I have this problem I resort to the 1881 census, which I can search street by street. So if you fill any name and hit on market street you can then search all the adjacent places and if you able to find the streets before and after Market Place, then you may be able to transcribe it onto a modern street map and get a location.

Regards Eldon.

Hello Valerie.  My o/h remembers Market Place was an alleyway off the main high street in Abergele, sandwiched between the now Midland Bank and a shop called Millwards (milliners and they sold boots too).  Down this alleyway was the butcher's shop and also an ironmongers.  In the early 1970s this alleyway was blocked off.  He remembers the butchers shop was owned by the Davies's but unfortunately cannot throw any light on your Maggie. If he remembers anything else, I'll be sure to post!!  Good luck with your search.

Hello Janey,

Good to hear that the shop is remembered, of course this Margaret Davies living there in 1911 with Thomas husband and two children David and Bessie probably is not my great aunt.

Maggie as she was known up and went to Patagonia with her husband but I have no idea of her married name.

She and the rest of the Davies lived in Peel Street and Jenkin Street , times were hard then I know my poor old Grandmother died in the workhouse near Abergele when she was only 27 no wonder Maggie took herself off just wish she had left me some clue 's go on.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
