The Sands Bar, Peterhead
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 22:48 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,

Are there any residents of Peterhead familiar with 'The Sands Bar'?

I'm led to believe that property is at number 3 Ware Lane - this is where my greatx5 grandfather, Anderson Strachan, was living in 1871 (although it was not a pub back then).

Anyway, would anybody be able to tell me if the buildings there now are modern, or if they are existing as they were from the 1870s?

An odd request, but I'd be interested to know.

regards

I entered "Sand's Bar" in google maps. The address came up as 3 Ware Road,Peterhead, not Ware Lane. You can get a satellite view & it appears to be a modern building. I'm sure there's a "Peterheader"out there who can be of more help, though! Have you checked out www.nls.uk site for Peterhead maps?

Hi Windsor87,

The Sands Bar is Ware Road as the previous poster points out. Ware Road is in Buchanhaven which used to be seperated from Peterhead. It's quite a poor area now and the bar was built perhaps 30 years ago. Buchanhaven is very old so there could possibly have been a Ware Lane at one time (It sounds like a trading area). Apart from local authority housing, it's mainly fisherman's cottages which have been upgraded. Down at the bottom of Ware Road there is a little harbour
and a little further along the shore you'll find Scotland's oldest Salmon smokehouse.

You'll still find loads of 'Strachan's' in Buchanhaven. :)

Apologies - it was 3 Ware Road.

Thanks for all the information on the area. When Anderson Strachan lived at 3 Wre Road he was listed as a pauper, so not a lot has changed.

Anderson was born in St. Fergus and crofted in Old Deer for most of his life. It seems that he moved into the town in old age when he was unable to keep working.

Thanks again.

Hi
I lived in that area for 12 years the owner now is Vinnie Stephen but before another 2 owners but was built by Joe Zandre who owned the chip shop & large store in Ware Road what was pulled down to build the Sands Bar in the late 60s early 70s, the area is not run down Ware Road is the border between Buchanhaven & Ugiepark full of characters and nice people as in every town.
