Polly Bass
« on: Monday 10 August 09 00:07 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a Polly Bass in their family tree, from Leicestershire, possibly Scalford.  Born circa 1878-1883.  She could have been christened Florence.  She married Henry Edwards from Manea in Cambridgeshire and they had children Frederick, Cyril, Mary, Laretta and William.  Polly died in 1920 giving birth to William. I am looking for details of the mother and father of Polly. Many thanks in advance.

Dear Karenlee
Yes that is a possibility, thank you for your quick reply. Are you able to view the 1881 census for me, to help find her and her parents.   Many thanks, Denise

Hi
The 1881 census is free for everyone to search.   Either www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.co.uk  That particular Florence was not born by then though.
You could also try looking on www.freebmd.org.uk   Her birth certificate would give her parents' names.   Her marriage certificate would confirm her father's name and it might be better to start with that so you are sure you are on the right lines.

Looking good.  Both birth and marriage for Florence Mary Bass are on freebmd.  Registered in Melton Mowbray. Birth March 1883 ref 7a 322a and marriage to Henry Edward (no s on it)  Dec 1903 7a 647.   Her death entry in 1920 gives her age as 37 so that fits nicely too.

Hmm, in 1881 Thomas appears to be widowed, living with three kids - Fred, Clara, and "Emona" (Emma?).
In 1882 he married Mary Ann Bass.
She was living in Scalford, Leicester in 1881, unmarried.

In 1871 she appears at the Melton Mowbray workhouse, along with a couple of kids:
RG10/3294 26/6
Mary Ann Bass, 32, b. Croydon
Emma, 11, b. Fulham
Fitz Henry, 7, b. Fulham

Emma is living in Melton Mowbray in 1881, an unmarried servant. I think "Fitz Henry" is "Frederick Bass" in 1881, in Scalford. There is also an Edith A Bass, 6M, a lodger (nurse child/foster child, it appears) with a family in Melton Mowbray.

It seems possible that Emma was the mother of Florence; her birth certificate should clear this up.  It seems that Emma might have married in the area, but not until 1904.
