emile louis
« on: Sunday 09 August 09 19:54 BST (UK) »
emile louis was my cousin who left Liverpool around 1909 to go to the Gold fields near San Francisco.  He never returned because he was murdered while he was out there.  we are trying to find some information about what happened to him.  Any ideas would be gratefully received.  Phyl

Do you know when/where he was born?

Hi Phyl:

Your Emile could have been headed for the Sierra Nevada or Northern California.  There really aren't too many areas around San Francisco to search for gold, but since quite a number of people have heard of San Francisco, it is referenced quite a bit.

As Shelly suggested, it would help if we had a bit more information, please.

There is an Emile Louis [b. about 1886]  who immigrated to the US from England in 1905?  He was in Montana in 1920.  Could this be him?

It looks like the Emile that Erato found was on a WWI Draft Registration Card as Emile Arthur Louis b. 27 Nov. 1885.  He was a naturalized US citizen.  It appears that he's still in Montana as of the 1930 Census.

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action shows only one Emile Louis; he left in 1905, was b. circa 1888 (on that record, at least), and was heading to Montreal (It is not uncommon for people to head into the US via Canadian ports).

Emile A. Louis in Montana died in 1936:

Age "38"? Whoever filled out his death certificate might not have known him very well.

Emile Louis was born Nov 24, 1889 in Seacombe, Birkenhead, Cheshire UK.
His mother was Grace Todd from Liverpool, and his father was Emile Louis from Mauritius, a ship's steward.  It was her second marriage. After she died he married again and had a second son Arthur Emile Louis born 12 Nov 1913 died Liverpool jan1994.
I have 2 cousins whose mothers remembered Emile and told me the story but noone knows what happened next.
The passenger lists show Emile Louis leaving Liverpool 1905 on the Tunisian for Halifax Nova Scotia - I think this will be him.   I don't think the Montana one is.
Thank you all very much for your interest.

You could try the county library for an obituary or perhaps a newspaper report of his death if it was, indeed, a murder.
