Thanks indeed!
Just sent an email to the records office...
I see that the IGI batch numbers cover the 1804 period at Carlisle - does that mean it is a complete record? If so, does it mean I won't find my William Santon in the parish records there? :-\

I am not to sure about the IGI coverage.

I see that Carlisle Circuit Ind. starts from 1814 Christ Church from 1831 Holy Trinity from 1741 and St, James 1863    I dont know if their records start from those dates or whether they are the only ones transcribed by the IGI  :-\

Perhaps someone else can tell us please.

Hi Detori

I'm not sure if those are totally complete runs or not.  There are a few spaces on the IGI for Cumberland.

Whether it is pr not though, at least one of the two largeparishes are indexed.  Caaaan't remember if they both are.

The main problem we have here, is people saying born Carlisle, when they really mean the area and there are loads of tiny parishes close to Carlisle, so it can be a case of just plodding through them.

They do have other records up there for that era though such as wills, taxes etc, and also some indexes to some of the local parishes including Brampton deanery.  Certainly there are gaps for some of these parishes on the IGI.

Best wishes

Hi

This site has the main gaps in the IGI for Cumberland.

Of course the other link is great because it gives Numers for any registers available for the era and also non conformists which appear on the IGI.

I'll check in the list when these start.

Of couse another big register is the RC for Carlisle which covers your dates.  It covers earlier chapels and Our Lady and St Joseph.  If there's aany chance of Rc ancestors though you should also look at Warwick Bridge which is older, and which many people still use due to family connections.

Both registers are in the RO and Carlisle and I think some of Warwick Bridge are in Local Studies in the Lanes Library.

Best wishes

Hi

This is form Cumbrian Ancestors, available from the RO including map of parishes.  Was about £7?

Parish records  starting before this date are:

Church of England

Carlisle: St Cuthbert 1693

St Mary 1648

Stanwix 1662 (Now part of Carlisle)

(Holy Trinity and Christ Church are from 1831 built to relieve St Mary and St Cuthbert).

Hi

Non Conf:

RC
Carlisle 1790

Warwick Bridge 1766

Presbyterian

Carlisle, Abbey St 1778

Fisher St 1774

Quaker - Quarterly Meeting Digests for Cumberland 1648 but Cartlisle Meetings not until 1822

These are the dates the baptism records start.

Thank you for that information Emms,  :)

So there are others that the IGI has not transcribed in Cumberland.  I would suspect thats the case with most areas.  :-\
