Carlisle, Cumberland - Parish - 1805 Santon
« on: Sunday 09 August 09 18:02 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone had access to parish records and could help me trace William Santon born in Carlisle, Cumberland about 1804-1806? I know that he had left the area by 1826 when he married in Leeds, Yorkshire (and later moved to London). He was a tailor by profession.
I would love to know whether the family had a long history in the Cumberland area, or were simply in the area around 1800.
Thank you for any information, or advice!
 :)

Hi Doctor Tim

I've never known anyone called Santon in the area or in old records of the area.

I looked on familysearch.org  and went to Record search then IGI and there were no Santons in Cumberland.  Most were in Yorkshire - not far away.

On thje other hand there's a Santon Bridge just near Wasdale and Gosforth in the county, so a bit surprising.

Do you have any of your own Santons anywhere else?

Best wishes

PS

By the way, you may know already, but at that early date, if you're asctually in the city, you need St Mary's or St Cuthbert's.

If you can get anyone going to the library or the record office, then registers are there.

Best wishes

I am wondering why you are so convinced that he was born in Carlisle if you havent found his baptism record .

I see they were living in Yorkshire in 1841 that says not born in the county..  I assume his is the marraige to Charlotte in Leeds

I searched the IGI any Santon, any status, any age and only came up with two neither in Carlisle.

Both were marriages in 1769 and 1767 a Hannah and George Santon. Workington and Isel Cumberland.

What other census's do you have them on  ???

Thank you Emms & Patrish - I really appreciate your help
I am not 'convinced' he was born in Carlisle / Cumberland - but that is what is noted in the 1861 census, so I thought it might be worth checking... To be honest, I'm floundering a bit in the dark with this one! After William reached London, all subsequent Santons in the line I'm tracing were born in London area. I know that Yorkshire is a Santon 'hotspot' going back hundreds of years - but getting past William is a bit tricky at present!
Anyway, thanks for the help and suggestions.
Best wishes,
Tim

1851 he says Cumberland ( indexed "SANTOR")

Yes the  1861 does say   Carlisle, Cumberland so that does seem the most likely, the only way forward is to search the parish records for Carlisle.

Perhaps there is not much coverage for Cumberland on the IGI  :-\

Thanks Geoff-E - that's very helpful!
I'm a long way from Cumberland - does anyone know if the records office there offers any kind of look-up service? Any figure on how complete the IGI indexes are?
