Birth Mary Ann Goater
« on: Sunday 09 August 09 11:51 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on Mary Ann Goater.
I know she was married 16 June 1816 to Richard Jaques at St Mary's Lambeth.  One of the witnesses was Benjamin Goater.  I don't know if this was her father or possibly a brother.
She must have been born about or before 1800.
Does anyone have any suggestions please??
Cheers!

Hi

Unless she was under age on her marriage (the age of consent was 21) she would need to be at least 21 to not need parental consent (which if she did may be specified in the church banns book, if it has survived, if the marriage was by banns or on the licence).

Have you found her still alive on any censuses? Have you checked the marriage register for any other Goater marriages?

The marriage according to the IGI occurred in Newington Southwark not Lambeth

MARY ANN GOATER
RICHARD JAQUES
Marriage:  16 JUN 1816   Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey

Marriage coverage of the St Mary Newington registers on the IGI is 1813-1837. Coverage of baptisms is for the same time frame.

The IGI has this marriage

BENJAMIN GOATER
DINAH SIMMS
Marriage:  31 MAY 1785   Alverstoke, Hampshire

This baptism would seem to indicate the couple moved from Hampshire

Diana Goater
Christening:  05 FEB 1794   St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey
Father:  Benjamin Goater
Mother:  Diana

St Mary's Lambeth has very limited coverage on the IGI.

Thanks for the information.
I have gone back and had another look at the original image of the marriage of Richard and Mary Ann Goater and it does look like the second witness may be Dinah Goater (the writing is quite hard to read)
I will have to check this all out.

This just leaves one other question...where was Richard Jaques from and who were his parents??

Thanks for your help!

Hi there, just checked the London marriages/ baptisms for you and found the following children: -

Name: Mary Ann Jaques baptised 22/3/1818 @ St Mary's lambeth
Parents: Richard Jaques & Mary Ann

Name: Amelia Cecilia Jaques baptised 12/9/1819 also @ St Mary's
Parents: Richard Jaques & Mary Ann

I've had a look at the original image of the wedding cert and it has him down as of the parish and bachelor but no  parent's details.

best wishes

Hi Photocruiser

Still can't help with a baptism for Richard but wanted to add that looking at the images for the baptisms of Mary Ann & Amelia shows they were living in Bird Street and that Richard was a compositor.
